[Mk2] [Turbo] Possible dead alternator? (JDM rev 2 turbo).

Post by nytrus90 »

Hey,

I have a JDM rev 2 turbo, here is my issue.

First off there is no battery light coming up on the dash regardless of the ignition being on or the engine being on.

now today I went to see if my alternator was functioning... here was the result:

battery was 12.3v when the engine was off and when I turned the engine on it dropped to about 9.8v, then rose to about 11.8v.

When I took the car to about 1-2k revs it dropped to about 9.8v again.

Is this a sign that my alternator has given up the ghost?

Or there anything that I can check that might also cause this similar issue?

thank you in advance.

With ignition on, check for 12+VE at all the pins of alternator plug. If all OK, alternator is most likely goosed.

If not, repair fault in wire not showing 12+VE.

Right update:

unplugged the 3 wire plug, tested with a test lamp here are the results.

White/Red - +12VE
Yellow - +12VE
Black - Nothing.

I know I need to trace the wire but it looks a real ball ache and I loose sight of it as soon as it goes through the intake manifold, is there any "hot spots" where there is most likely to be a break that I should check?

I really dont wanna pull the whole loom out to find the break :(.

Update, after some very helpful advice for a forum member it turns out my ECU-IG fuse was blown, replaced it and it instantly blew again, turns out that intercooler cooling fan is the issue, unplugged the ecu for it in the boot (trunk) and it stopped blowing all the lights on the dash were present.

My question is I have a MOT due tomorrow will it be ok to take it out for a little drive with no IC fan?

But more to the point where should I be checking for the trouble maker? Will is be a simple case of just replace IC ecu?

Final update, I replaced the fan ECU/relay in the boot and all was fine.
