Best feeling in the world when you first drove it and heard the engine roar?

Was good to see you earlier, albeit briefly. The car looks stunning in the flesh and the engine work is just superb, seriously. That noise..! =P~

Really pleased for you Karl. Yes it's been a long wait but the end product always more than makes up for the cost etc.

I hear you're not one for feeling out a car before getting in a booting it...

Have you put the lights on yet....

Good to see you have the car back Karl. I saw it in the flesh when I went up and have to say that the engine does look amazing.

Peter scared the hell out of me too when he took me for my test drive!!!!

I don't think I have been hat fast in it myself! Ha ha!!

Will enjoy being able to see what further work you do on the car.

I have about 6 dings to sort out myself on my car. I got quoted £55 per dent which seems a bit steep to be honest. I am still looking for someone.

I must start a project thread myself although I have done most of the work now!! Actually, that a lie - it never ends!! :D

Wow, I go out for a short drive for 8 or so hours and have loads of responses on my thread!

Small update - car is still working perfectly and I'm still loving it! I feel like a little kid at Christmas. Even smaller update - I nearly bankrupted myself on petrol today and I think the clerk at my local Shell garage thinks I'm mad as I've visited it x3 times today

I intended to start on the sound deadening today but alas I got carried away with the driving so this didn't materialise. The only thing I fitted today was this:

Image

Hhhmmm.... There's a mark on the brace. I might have to find a TRD brace to replace it in a couple of months time :-k

I have now contacted x7 dent removal companies between last night and today to enquiry about the removal of the dents in the passenger door. The only response I've had back yet was the most recommended one who is unfortunately working in France until November. I'm hoping to have some responses and quotes in tomorrow with a view of having it fixed on Wednesday or Thursday during the day.

Anyway to address some of the responses:

Ashley & George Thank you very much I'm chuffed with the car and the route it's taking. It's probably quite obvious to see I'm excited about it

Phil - I love the sound of the engine although nothing compared to hearing it roaring behind me that first time that I properly put my foot down. The acceleration is just unbelievable. I expected the car to be fast but its unreal! I'm sure Peter will tell you that it's a lot lot faster than he expected it to be and I know he enjoyed himself on the test drives which is always a good sign. We will have to have a proper catch up soon - before the baby comes along and selfishly steals all my spare time

The LEDs you did we're perfect, thank you. The heater is spotless and the perfect colour combo and brightness. It's spot on :thumleft:
I was impressed to see no dead spots as well

Oh and yes I did boot it a little  I find it the best way to learn how far I can safely push it and what it's limits are. Sod trying to feel it out and slowly increase acceleration and speed. Boot it and hope for the best

Slipping Clutch - thank you. It definitely is fantastic! I cannot stress how quickly this car accelerates now and the speed is instant. No lag, no spooling time, just instant break neck speed. It's a true feat of engineering.

I had been driving this around all day and jumped in the boring new diesel Octavia estate and for the first few hundred metres I honestly thought that something was wrong with it. It just seemed so slow and didn't have that immediate punch of power.

Craig - thanks, I'm loving it. The exhaust is immense isn't it!! They managed to get the tone spot on and I've fallen in love with the mufflers. I haven't even taken them out to try the car without them. The level of sound and bass/throatiness is spot on with them fitted. It's enough of a sleeper exhaust that I can pull into my garage at 4am without waking up/annoying too many people and equally its loud enough that if I put my foot down even a fraction everyone nearby knows there's a beast of an engine lurking in the depths of the car.

I also like the fact that the backbox is a lot higher in position than my last one. It's more subtle and tucked out the way. Peter got the decisions on the exhaust spot on!

Matt - thanks for the mirror pictures. Having had a second look I don't think that the ones I have are actually EastBear one :-k

They sold on eBay for a measly and depressing £27

tsango - I think I might have actually scared Peter a bit on the test drive (which was me taking it easy as the exhaust sounds when I drove off properly will confirm ) - I don't think he expect me to plant my foot quite as much as I did so soon

There's plenty of ideas in the pipeline with this car although like everything they are money dependant. The baby is due in December and I'm trying to finish off our house so money is a bit too tight to spend a fortune on the car after the engine swap. We are looking to sell up and move again in around x2 years so I would imagine that the next big step forward will come around that time. Up until then I will tackle smaller fiddlly jobs and things that I want to do in order to get the car in a perfect condition.

In an ideal world in the future I would like to see a TRD supercharger fitted along with a custom standalone ECU and forged internals. I want all out power but the car needs to still be able to be relatively refined and normal as its becoming a daily driver. I will never sacrifice reliability for power though - I value reliability above all else. Who knows what will happen in the future though... I may get a 2gr and fit it to another MR2 and keep one car for the week and one for Sunday best

In relation to the dings - any small imperfections in the bodywork annoy me and so it will have immediate attention. Your quotes do seem a little higher than I was hoping for... Once I've got some solid confirmed quotes back I will post up and let you know so that you can use it as a bit of a comparison.

All the agreed value documents went off to the insurance company yesterday. I applied for a measly £6500 agreed value with Adrian Flux which given the amount of work which has been completed I would hope will be accepted without question. As I'm not really sure how these things work though I will just have to play the nervous waiting game and hope for the best

Yes I need to get my invoices from Peter to send off to insurance company!!

My car so far has cost me about £11k, but I think I will be lucky to squeeze £6k as an agreed value.

I contacted another dent removal guy and he quotes around £45 per panel. Each door for example has maybe 3 or 3 slight dents and there is a ding in the boot. They are all very slight. You have to look down the side of the car to see them but like you I cannot stand them..!!

Re: the strut braces. I have had my front and engine bay ones chromed. I picked them up today. Will fit them and put some pics on. Cost me £90.

Like you though we are looking to move house soon and we have a 3 year old and a 6 month old so messing about on the drive all day is a distant memory!! Ha ha!!

With my agreed value policy they haven't requested receipts of anything. They sent out a form which they wanted filled in covering what's been replaced, what's been modified, money spent etc... They also requested x7 colour photographs.

My car has cost me more than that so far.... I've requested an agreed value of £6,500 (as the engine I have fitted isn't easy or cheap to find). Ive never had a policy like this before though. I presume that I send them the relevant details and request the value that I think is fair before they review this and decide what price to issue.

I believe that if I disagree with the value that they issue I then need to have it independently appraised. I have a dreaded feeling they will come back with a stupidly low agreed value like £2,000 at which point I would cry

I've finally tracked down the perfect dent removal person!! He comes very very highly recommended on pistonheads and his work is meant to be second to none. What's even better is the more dents you have the cheaper it gets (even with the discount I'm getting from mentioning pistonheads). I'm having the two big dents on the door and two tiny dents removed (one in the rear wing and one in the bootlid) and its costing me £100 cash in hand. He is coming on Monday morning (the 9th) so I will post up with before and after photos for you. I'm not sure how far north he covers but let me know if you want his number :thumleft:

I do love chromed strut braces!! Ideally I would like a chromed TRD rear brace as I think it would set the engine off brilliantly. It will be a while till the bank account looks healthy enough again to afford that though

I remember seeing this car when I dropped my car (the white MR2 turbo with the red and black leather seats fitted) off at Peter’s and the transformation from then until now is simply staggering.

That engine is a thing of beauty! The workmanship that has gone into it is nothing short of inspiring and is testament to Peter's skill and craft. Those wheels (a recent addition???) also look fantastic on the car and suit it very nicely indeed.

Having read your last few posts, it sounds like it was well worth the wait and money in the end and it’s great to see that you’re enjoying every minute of driving the car.

It must have been such an amazing feeling to finally get back into the car and hear that engine/exhaust roar to life for the first time! Hopefully I’ll be able to experience a similar feeling soon and be able to pick mine up soon  - the anticipation is killing me!

Thanks for the comments - it was an amazing feeling to get the car back and I'm ecstatic with how it runs and the work that has been done to it. The sound and acceleration can only be experienced and not described.

I know you'll be pleased to get yours back - when is it due?

The wheels have actually been on my car for some time now. I think that they look a lot more pronounced as the new dropped suspension has settled in over the past few months. As such the car is looking lower and this then draws your attention to the wheels more. I love them. One day I will get a nice set of three spoke Advans for her though, oh and a TRD rear strut brace, and a standalone ECU, and the list just forever grows

Today I've been rather busy one way and another.... (after the compulsory spirited drive and trip to the petrol station  ) Before I launch into loads of photos firstly apologises that they aren't of great quality - the joys of my iPhone as opposed to my SLR

Yesterday I sent off my altered V5 with receipts, a letter from Peter and a covering letter to the DVLA in the hope that they will alter my V5 to reflect my new engine size, number etc.... I will keep you updated on if they change it without hassle as I've heard plenty of horror stories.

So today I intended to fit the sound deadening; I unwrapped it and split into two so that I have relatively equal amounts to work with on both doors:

Image

Tbh this is about as far as I got with the sound deadening as I got distracted doing other things to the car and was then too knackered and hungry to fit it. I will do it one day soon though

The postie then arrived with a package for me from Peter. This had various items in it, but the one I was most interested in to start with was a different gear lever. My current gear lever is a short shift B&M one which when combined with the B&M drop plate I've found too short for every day usage. Peter came to my rescue and sent me a shorter OEM lever (rev3 iirc). So although I vowed never to replace this again as it was a pig of a job the first time I set about stripping it all down.

My B&M short shifter which I have fitted can be seen here:

Image

Strip down commenced on the driveway:

Image

And if by magic it's gone!

Image

Removed and ready to strip:

Image

It stripped down surprising easily this time to be honest!! I guess it's easier when you know what your doing

Image

Here's a comparison. B&M short shifter against the Rev3 one I was replacing it with. Perfect height increase for me

Image

Putting it back together

Image

And fitted

Image

Image

Image

Image

Gear changes are very smooth and its the perfect height for me now. It isn't an awful lot higher but I'm clasping the gearknob in my hand now rather than changing with the top of it.

After this I wanted to fit my Alcantara recovered cubby box - the one between the seats.

Here's a side by side comparison:

Image

I've got a manual cut off switch in my current cubby box for the engine bay lid fans. As such I drilled the appropriate size hole in it:

Image

Fitted it and was good to go \:D/

Image

Image

Image

Oh and whilst I was scrambling around on the floor here's proof of the JDM flare and bracket

Image

After this work was a mod I've wanted to do for ages!!! The only thing that really annoys me about my interior is my faded blue handles and old scabby door locks attached to them. They don't match anything else in the car and don't look the part. They had to go.

Now you might remember that I fitted highly polish chrome slam clasps... It just so happens that I have lovely chrome handles to match

So here goes the strip down:

Image

My old rubbish handles

Image

Bit of a quick comparison

Image

Heres a side by side shot

Image

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that there is a very slight difference between the two of them. The new chrome ones have the bottom cable connector facing up rather than down so it was just a case of a quick pop out, reposition and it was ready to fit.

And the new one fitted:

Image

Image

Then came the drivers side

Image

Image

I re-greased everything whilst it was all apart and also tightened up some of the fittings. The new handles therefore have a far nicer and tighter opening feel. Al in all I'm very happy

Peter also sent these to me...

Image

They are new polybushes for the front Anti Roll Bars (pretty much the only thing that isn't polybushed). This is a job for another day though - I will attack these in a week or two when I've got a helping hand.

All in all a good day
Off for another spirited drive now

I would certainly consider a tow along petrol tanker if one cropped up at the right price

Thanks madbasshunter- I'm really pleased with how it's looking and progressing at the moment

I managed to have a play around under the car a bit today and got a couple more jobs sorted...

I've noticed whilst driving recently that the passenger seat has been wobbling around a little. A little investigation today showed a loose bolt on the seat runner. The thread had been pretty much stripped. Therefore it was re-tapped with a different size and a beefier M10 bolt was dropped in. Job done and no more wobble :thumleft:

Then came the job of replacing the front ARB polybushes. So the new kit got laid out ready:

Image

The first old one got removed with relative ease, and here's a new and old comparison:

Image

Then came the other side:

Image

I decided to use new stainless steel bolts to future proof it

Image

Then with a small amount of swearing the new ones got fitted:

Image

Image

Whilst I was under the car I had a look at the front drop links. These were fitted around 8 months ago and have covered next to no mileage and only in the dry but it was the only advisory on the MOT (the rubber boots were apparently perishing on them). Well I agree with the MOT tester - the boots are definitely perished! I am not at all impressed with the crap that Delphi are selling these days. I won't ever use their drop links again. Here is what the fronts looked like (although surprisingly the rears are still like new):

Image

I've ordered up a set of very sturdy looking drop links from TFS a trader on here. They are being made for me today and should hopefully be with me shortly so I can replace the rubbish currently on there.

Also during the past three days the fan belt has developed an annoying squeal where it's slipping. So this got a quick tighten up which solved the issue.

That was pretty much it for today. I took a few quick pics of the exhaust and the heater LEDs which I hadn't properly grabbed pics of before:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

That was about it for today

Wondering what else to alter or upgrade after the drop links... I'm thinking that the next job has to be to replace that battery with a new and slightly larger size one :-k

It's definitely on the list.... I think the order of the to buy list currently goes like this;

Front drop links (currently being made), then new stainless under tray bolts and nuts, a larger battery, rear drop links, and then possibly Whitelines.

Whilst I'd love Whitelines they aren't cheap so they will probably wait until after the baby in late December

I'm sure there were a couple of other things I was after but my minds gone blank :-k

They did indeed - I've got a couple of sets on order which when delivered will be up for sale. I've also managed to source some of the chrome shut plates :thumleft:

Well you all know how precious I am about the car bodywork , and as such the dings have been bugging me to no end. I managed to book Steve Cushmans who comes highly highly recommend. He owns DENTPUSHER and his work is second to none.

He came on time today, was very friendly and did a top notch job. I'm over the moon with his work.

The dents were difficult to capture on picture and were a lot lot worse in real life. Here they are before:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

There were x3 large dents in the passenger door, one by the petrol cap, a large one in the boot lid and then lots of fingertip ones in the boot lid.

And here it is after hours and hours of Steve slaving away on it:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

His work was perfect!! He went over the car with a fine tooth comb and took out all of the little dents in the car. I would happily recommend him to anyone and would have paid double the price for his work :thumleft:

On a side note my battery died #-o
