[Mk2] [NA] Dash lights like a Christmas tree!

Post by Paulhilluk »

I have a 92 import tin top (Rev2)

Recently I changed the alternator and before the swap the car started with no lights on the dash, under the help of a full battery it was was fine.

After I installed a new alty and I have a dash full of lights!! :(

I have also stripped away the sound system since it has been off the road including the sub all the speakers, power module for the amp and the amp from the near side of the car.

It worth noting the head unit won't power up and I am getting voltage from the new alty. It is a used part!

Any help at all would be appreciated! :thumleft:

I have resolved the head unit issue. It was cowboy wiring..

Just had a multimeter on the battery, showing 10.4V and dropping under load....

I had the radio on in the car for a little while and then the battery died. Ran for 5 mins and now it won't start without a jump. Leave to run for a few minutes then restart and still not enough juice.

Would it be a problem if it was an alty from an Auto? The guy I bought it off said it was for a Manual, however he was breaking an auto when I checked his Ebay store out.

Voltage is dropping.. Suspect the alternator is incorrect....

Has anyone heard of an issue in the loom that could stop the battery charging?

Yes. W/ignition on you should have +12v on all 3 pins. From memory the black and yellow one breaks in the loom sometimes. Use the search, there's a thread about it by Peter at SBits.

ok, it has to be the loom as I am getting 12V at the fuse box. Battery is dead for now so waiting for a quick recharge.

Does anyone know which cable to bypass at the fuse box? There are two black and yellow cables I am not sure which one to use. I can't find a drawing anywhere and have no drawing on my fuse box cover.

Thanks..

The thicker one, the thin one is power to the ECU. They both come off the ECU-IG fuse

OK, So I have had my alternator tested and it was reported as working.

I have found the problem to my low voltage at the plug, it was corrosion build up and I am now getting 11.9, 11.9 and 11.4.

I have a few lights on my dash, they do not come on until I disarm the immobiliser. I get a battery light, orange oil light, ! warning light.

No idea why it still won't charge. :(

Sorry to jump on to this thread but this sounds similar to what I'm currently experiencing. I thought it was my battery. But it's not.

Except Paulhilluk, you sound a few steps ahead of me on the trouble-shooting. Also sounds like you know what you're doing. Unlike me!

Being devoid of mechanical/electrical skill can you tell me how to do the multimeter check as described a few posts up.
