[Mk2] [Turbo] Brake Pad and Disc Upgrade

Post by vanman1936 »

Hi

Rev 2 Turbo needs a new set of both for mainly track use and a little road driving.

I have searched a little. Don't want to spend a fortune.

Views on both appreciated - have seen the mtec, mintbitz and ziggy grooved and dimpled discs that look pretty good value at less than ebc discs - any experience?

Pads - stock, ebc, mintex, ferrodo? Know about carbotech but spending 10% of car value on pads feels rich.....although I have heard they are great.

Cheers

I'll be putting some sexy Black Diamond ones on mine soon. Just a shame the contact area doesn't stay black.

I haven't used them before but they have pretty good reviews around the net and don't cost the world!

If you're on a budget I'd go with a set of OEM Toyota discs and pads, they are better than a lot of aftermarket 'performance' alternatives and are good value for money. If you can stretch to it then a set of OEM discs and something like Carbontech, Porterfield or Endless pads would make for a good track setup.

I'd also avoid cheap grooved, drilled or dimpled discs, the fancy patterns just make them more susceptible to cracking or warping, especially on the track.

If your calipers are looking a bit second hand, a full overhaul will make a significant difference to the braking.

Never tried them but have read a few bad reviews.

But... but.. they're so pretty

Maybe I'll just go OEM and spend the change on petrol. I don't need any extra performance anyway.

...sadly, it does until you try them!

I have green stuff pads and and grooved / dimpled discs on my rev 3 Tubby when I bought it -unknown discs but marginally better than stock I'd say.

I have grooved CRN discs and red stuff pads on my GT4 and the pads seem to need more heat in them to bite. The dust is pretty bad though.

On my original MR2 I had stock pads and discs -new ones will be way better than used ones, lots of folk forget that! They're not that bad from the start.

...Then I went to Carbotech pads, stock discs, braided lines and dot 5 fluid and the difference was just night and day. The poads were expensive but *WOW*. Worth saving for!!

I'm running Carbotechs, along with Goodridge braided lines and drilled/grooved discs. The complete package is awesome! Possibly the best brakes on any car I've ever driven, bar things costing over £100k!

They're dusty, so you'll need to keep cleaning your wheels, but worth every penny in my opinion. :thumleft:

How many track days will you get out of a set of Carbo Tech pads - appreciate it varies, just a guide.
