Steering Problems.....help needed.

I have a rev 5 n/a and have some issues with steering I need your help to resolve. Everything is fine and it handles like its on rails until I reach 65-70 mph when the steering wheel vibrates badly and it handles really badly. Everything feels really light and it is completely unstable until I drop below 65-70 again. It is on standard 15" wheels and correct size tyres.

I took to my local garage and they checked tyres, tyre pressures, wheel balancing, full wheel alignment and also they checked suspension and steering for wear or play. All was found to be good, they took it on a test run but had nowhere to get it to the speeds needed to experience the problem. What else can I look at or has anyone else had this issue. It's really spoiling a very nice car as I don't trust it when overtaking and motorways are out of the question.

Really need some help here as I've no idea what to try next and not rich enough to start changing things at random. You guys have always come up trumps in the past

I was told by a tyre-fitter that an imbalance can also be caused by uneven wear on the brake disk or an uneven build-up of crud on the discs.

The balancing of wheels 'should be' of an equal standard given the high tech equipment in garages these days. However it may be worth taking the wheels to another garage to confirm them. The symptoms you describe are certainly a balance issue.

I take it that if you drive well beyond that speed the juddering stops? That's what normally would happen with incorrectly balanced wheels.

I have no idea what happens if I drive well beyond ha speed as its to unstable to even contemplate.

Just a few other points to consider:

Wheel bearings
Camber/castor adjustment on BOTH wheels - should be the same.

Personally I'd take it to either a steering and geometry specialist like Wheels In Motion or a reputable 2 specialist like Rogue for a diagnostic session....
Probably save a lot of time and money in the long run since there are so many things this could be. That said I'd first follow advice here and get it on a motorway and push up through the vibration. If it stops when you're another 10-15 mph faster I'd say it's a wheel imbalance. Get another member with known good well balanced front wheels and swap them over for a run...
