OLD MR2 OWNER WANTING ANOTHER!

Post by orangejunkie »

Hi all,

I have just registered on this forum today, however I am not new to Mr2s. I bought a Caribbean Blue Rev3 a few years ago and loved it.

I currently work for a well know Tuning company and was obviously drawn to the one of the cars that we specialise in, but now its time for another Mr2!

I am looking at a Turbo this time, and there are a couple on Ebay currently that have caught my eye.

For me, this will be a nice daily driver. I am not interested in chasing HP figures, but do want reliability. A nice stock car with just a filter and pipe will do me.

I believe just like the NA versions, the Rev3 seems to be the way to go, but if a Rev2 will tick the boxes for me, then i`d be more than happy to save some funds. I know there are quite a few engine changes such as the Turbo and HG, and there is also the AFM vs MAP sensor which would normally be important for raising HP. But for my needs, i am not sure i need to worry about these changes, unless you guys can tell me otherwise?

Also, am i right in thinking the Rev2s dont handle as well due to a rear subframe difference?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Ant. :D

Go for a Rev3 turbo, the suspension changes were from Rev2 onwards though. :thumleft:

Rev3 turbos also have a better turbo and headgasket amongst other benefits. :thumleft:

Good luck.

Hi Ant - Welcome to the club. There's plenty of searchable info on here that's been asked thousands of times before over the years. What does your company specialise in on these cars? Just tuning? Or the cars in general?

Thanks for the welcome and info :-)

I work for K-tec Racing. We specilise in Tuning Renaults, mostly the Rs models.
Its a job with many perks, and I have been able to learn a plethora of infomation on engine and suspension tuning as well as being able to spend time in the Dyno with our technician learning about engine calibration. I have also done some road driving while he has live-mapped next to me. A strange experience i can tell you when the car starts accelerating itself where he`s made a tweak to the timing!

I currently own a Clio 172, the early Phase 1 type. Its been great fun and is rapid for what it is. But... i miss my old Mr2. It didnt quite have the performance or indeed the fuel economy of the Clio, but it was just an all round nice car, especially in Caribbean Blue.

Having had an NA, and with working with some pretty quick Turbo Clios, i want an Mr2 Turbo.

There is a really nice Black Rev 2 and i have contacted the owner. It looks tidy and has just about the right mods for me. It seems to have a lot of interest, so it may not stick around too long.

There is also a REALLY nice white Rev 3 which TBH is perfect, and having done some research, the owner is in fact a forum member on here, although his name escapes me.
But, until i get shot of the Clio, i`m about £500 short lol and i`m not going to raid our Joint savings (the GF will shoot me), so i`ve not wanted to waste the Chaps time. To compound the issue, the Clio has a Gbox issue (noisy bearing) so despite the fact its very tidy, its not exactly going to move quickly.

Hence my post. I know there is quite a bit of info out there, but then i also know the internet is full of BS. I thought i`d bounce my situation off a few guys that know :D

Yes thats the one....

For me, thats perfect. Perhaps revert the filler cap back to stock and maybe remove the rear spats, but otherwise i love the look. I think the price is worth every penny. As i said though, both from an insurance perspective and from a financial one, i just cant do it atm, otherwise i`d be straight up there with the cash. I`d need to swap the insurance over to the Mr2 leaving the Clio uninsured.. Not ideal. One of the techs here wants to buy my car, but as is sods law, needs to sell his first lol.

The other one i like is this one ebay 181122702439, but someone has already been to see it, so it may not be around for too much longer. I believe this is a Rev 2, which is why i started the thread.

Thanks for the Offer of the Job Swap John. I`m ok for now lol

I mostly deal with the Export side of the business throughout the day, but we have so many ongoing projects at the moment (One SC Clio circa 370hp and another 400+ hp Clio Turbo) that i sometimes get involved sourcing parts and discussing the project.

Having W/shop access is also a big bonus too :)

Are you referring to the black one here? :)

I think he is currently in Essex.

If you want a reliable car with the best engine variant - buy Dave's white one in that link. He is a very experienced MR2 owner and puts good mods on his cars.

Can't recommend the guy enough - very happy to chat and help with everything MR2 related.

LOL...

I had a feeling you guys would be saying this! I guess i knew it as well. I have never wanted a car so bad!

I`ve made a step today and listed the Clio for £750 on Gumtree, so hopefully someone will snap it up soon. Would make a good track slag with coilovers, engine mounts and the usual cat-back and Re-map.
In an ideal world, i can get it gone in the next few days and then contact Dave directly.

Thank you all for the information. :)

Just to reinforce my belief that i already have a pretty awesome Girlfriend,
she has agreed to let me use some of the funds from our joint account until such time as i get shot of the Clio. :D perhaps its because she`ll be insured on it too??
I did have a call about the Clio last night, so i am hoping it will be gone soon.

Going to Pm Dave later this morning!

Thank you for your advice and opinions. I know i will be very happy with that car.

Spoke to Dave last night for about 1 hour and 45minutes!

Top bloke and gave me so much information. He has agreed for me to meet at a relatives house as he was away this weekend, mainly because i`m desperate to get the car now! He understood the whole` i must have that car` predicament!

Going to see it Saturday with money in my pocket, so i should have a new motor Saturday night!

As a bonus, i have someone coming to look at the Clio too, either tonight or tomorrow night :D

I plan on keeping the car as is. Maybe a few `personalised` bits here and there, but i`m afraid that exhaust is staying on Rory
I much prefer the single exits on these. I am planning on getting involved in the meets and shows too, as it would be a shame for such a well known car to drop off the radar.

Thank you for the welcome and endorsment on the car. I`m pretty excited to pick this car up. Its going to be one long night Friday lol.

Yeah that's why I said to him if I come and see it, I'm going home with it lol.
The guys at work have all said how nice it looks even if they're not Mr2 fans, which clearly highlights what a good car it is. I really feel like I'm getting a lot of car for the money...

To make the purchase even sweeter, the first person who came to see the Clio tonight has agreed a price and left a deposit, so that's sold too. Collecting tomorrow hopefully.

Happy days!
