[Mk2] [NA] Mk2 as a daily drive?

Hey all,

Thinking of getting an mr2 mk2 NA, and wondering what everyone thinks about using it as a daily drive to do around 16-18miles round trip a day. Do you think reliability would be an issue?

I've been driving an mr2 turbo as my daily driver 15-20 miles a day since sept 11 ~… issues were a stuck caliper and coil pack so it didn't start one day last Xmas when it had snowed.

Edit oh yea, and petrol is an issue.

My MK2 NA is my daily drive. Doing around 20,00miles a year. Admittedly it's not the best daily. But it's never had any major problems. *Touch Wood*

The first one has been for sale awhile but I wouldn't let that put you off. I think most people would prefer to get a turbo for 2k instead of a mint NA? The one I just bought was for sale for 3+weeks and I thought that was a bit suspicious, like you say but when I went to have a look I was shocked nobody had bought it before me. I've used an NA and then a beams as dailies for three going on four years now.

issues were a stuck caliper.

I'm just trying to free up my second one today.

Mine's been my only car and daily driver for a 15 mile round trip for 18 months now.

One caliper stuck on and was smoking after around 1/2 mile. Got that replaced at a garage not of my choosing (limped to closest garage).

Now the caliper on the other side is starting to stick. Mechanic tried to free it off for me at the MOT last week but it's getting rather hot again now .

Is there any quick fix for these that'll get me through the next few days? Got to get to work Wednesday-Friday and don't really fancy f**king the discs too. Then I'll have enough time to send it to the garage and get it replaced if that is ultimately what needs doing.

EDIT: I was looking at the Rev 1 unit by the looks of it. £75 for the one I need...

I used my turbo daily for 6 1/4 years, was turn key reliable.

The key is to keep on top of maintenance. If you spot something that looks like it might be an issue in a few months, do it immediately.

My '2 only ever "let me down" twice. First time I'd left the door slightly ajar over night flattening the battery and the second time was when the battery simply died (old age) on me. The second is a perfect case in point. I'd noticed for a couple of day that the engine was turning over slower than normal and on the day that I'd planned to go and get a new battery, it died.

Yea this winter I had very weak turnover to start up so replaced the battery before I got stranded. Things like this are important.
If you can't stay on top of it or borrow someone else's car every now and again I'd re think.

I.e if a shock blows or the clutch goes how will you get on?

As above, ran a turbo daily for close to 5yrs and 50k, and the only time it failed on me was due to a dead battery. So an N/A should be no issue

i use mine as a daily does 30 mile a day during the week for work and use it for holidays up top of scotland 8 hour each way, down norwich way 4 hour each way, only had a wheel bearing catch me by suprise. had it for just over a year now

i used my rev3 tubby for a daily 75mile each way daily driver and for approx 100 miles of that I used it pretty hard. Oil and filter got changed every three weeks and had no problems for the 5 months i did it .

Had my 23 yr old rev1 n/a as a daily driver for almost 14 yrs now. Great practical but fun daily drive.

I use mine as a daily. Haven't had any issues with it, always starts, had a couple of moments where it looked like it was considering not starting but that is down to the battery which is far too small for the car (it gets the job done). Fuel wise I'm getting about 25-26mpg but I have a heavy foot. Just make sure it is a well sorted one mechanically and you will be fine. Bare in mind that they (well mine at least) take ages to warm up but 10-15 miles should be fine, it is warmed up about 3/4 into my 5.7 mile commute.
