Forced sale of very quick MK1 - New MOT

Post by LeeBarton »

Having spent lots of time and money getting my MK1b to its current condition, the weather and my health is enforcing the probable sale of my great MR2 MK1 (wind and snow have deteriorated and damaged the membrane and tiles on my roof and it needs a lot of work!!!).

The car is a Mica Blue MK1b example with low miles and has been the subject of many upgrades over the past few years. Dyno'd at just under 150bhp with HKS cams and a piggy back, programmable ECU, induction system, stainless exhaust, braided hoses, polybushed, etc, etc, etc, This gives very good performance on cam, but is still docile around town.

It comes with two sets of alloys (15"), one set with great condition Michelin Pilots and the other set with great Yokohama Parada's. All tyres have more than 60% tread left and the wheels are in very good condition (both sets).

Fitted with a Clifford anti-theft system with remotes, the car comes with two sets of keys and fobs.

No damage and the car has just undergone a massive chassis restoration carried out by a restoration welder who has done a fantastic job of repairing or replacing floors, sills, inner wings etc., so the car now has to be one of the most solid around. I was originally quoted over £2,000 for thw welding work, but was very fortunate to be put in touch with a great welder/restorer who had been made redundant and spent 12 days removing the dreaded rust and replacing panels and other areas of the chassis, floors, sills until the underside is stronger than new. Thicker guage metal was used in the repairs, so the car is now good for many years of enjoyment. I have a lot of photographs of the refurbishment, so that will be added to the history file.

There is some work to do, but I have been waiting for the weather to improve. I have purchased sufficient professional spray cans to put a good coat of base, plus clear (also have primers), so nothing to buy. The welding has been fully protected with expensive joint sealer followed by underseal. The front wings are basically sound, but have the normal small areas of rust around the wheelarch and lower front by the valance. There are lots of wings about that can be purchased and a local Toyota garage is selling new wings for around £95 +VAT. I would imagine a weekends work would see the car fully back to excellent bodywork.

Interior is very good and has a very good Alpine stereo system (CD currently does not work, but it could be something very simple.

gearbox has had a new 5th gear and syncro fitted and the car has just undergone a full service by a MR2 specialist with lots of new bits fitted (pads, discs etc.

I have a large history file with receipts for the camshafts, gearbox services, dyno tests, MOT's etc, so no worries about what has been done. Car handles superbly and can only be described as 'quite quick!!!'.

I can deliver to mainland UK as I live just over the channel, but come over to see my grandchildren quite often as they live near Ashford.

As I have said above, I need to repair my huse roof, and am open to offers (I live just an hour from the french side of the tunnel, so quite easy to come and see it and I will ensure you are looked after whilst here as I have a good wine cellar!!!), but they have to be sensible. This is a great alternative to the 1.5 conversion and retains originality and balance.

I wont let it go for peanuts (it has had over £8,000 spent in the last 20,000 miles), so come and see it and make an offer. At worst, you have an enjoyable day in France, at best, you will get one of the soundest MK1's available (and possibly one of the quickest).

Please PM me and I can telephone you by return so that you can ask any relevant questions.

I have tried to describe the car in detail, but as we all know, it is hugely important to see it in the flesh, but can send some recent photographs if requested.

Hi

As mentioned in my posting, I have no idea what it is worth and each potential purchaser would probably have a different price in mind, which is why I said to come and see it and make an offer. I know it owes me more than I will get for it, so if you know what you might pay, then let me know and I can then indicate whether it is worth coming to see it.

I have only just decided it might have to go, so did not put much thought into the price. Having paid out for the restoration, I had planned to keep it and progress to making it very special.

Hi

My apologies.

If I have to put a price on the car, I would consider offers over £1650. The engine and gearbox cost more than that amount to get to its current performance.

Hope that helps and again, apologies for not knowing the rules. Beginners mistake (or senior moment!!!).
