New Owner of Graeme Shaw's MK2 Turbo. New to MR2s, looking for some infomation.

Post by Groves »

So I bought his MR2 on saturday after being blown away after he took me for a spin. I have never ownd a proformance car, as I normally just wast my money tarting them up. So was looking to make a car the car that goes as fast as it looks, without the hard work. I dont have a huge understanding on engine mods etc.
Im looking for some information on the car. I have been mooching about on her about work my car has had. I may have it wrong but my car was running 300bhp with a ct20, which was then changed to a hybrid ct26 but brought the car down to 267bhp, just wondering why this was, and if it was ever corrected to give over 300bhp which apparenly it should have?
The ebay discription says "It was dynod at McDonald racing and was pushing close to 300bhp and that was before the new turbo."
The spec list I think I have is below, if you can give me an idea on how much power I should be running, as a couple MR2 owners I know rekon there should be anywhere from 350-400bhp. Thankyou

Rev3 Engine
Blitz Hybrid Stage 3 CT26
HKS BOV
Apexi AVCR Boost Controller
Blitz Induction Kit
Greddy Intercooler
Alloy Race Radiator
Walbro Fuel Pump
Samco Pipes
Berk De-cat Downpipe
Mongoose Exhaust

On a ct26 hybrid I doubt it.

Some management would make the most of it

Fensport CT26 Stage 3 Hybrids are supposedly good for 360bhp and Turbotechnics 380bhp.

Dont know about the Blitz ones but would imagine they're as good if not better.

If it is it'll go pop soon.

I'd be surprised if you're running more than 310hp on that setup.

If it were that easy to get 350-400bhp many of us would be a lot richer

I'd say it's somewhere in the low 300bhp region. Which to be honest is a really useable power level in an MR2 :thumleft:

Well it turns out ive been driving like a girl...so my friend suggested a race. He owns a Celica GT4, same engine as me, running 318bhp. Decided it would be a rolling start so I dont spin into an oblivion off the lights. Not relising rolling in second was building the boost, so I had instant boost when I planted my foot, flew from the GT4, and while the front wheels being in the middle lane, the rear swang from the bus lane to the right lane :? ooops. safely say im running 300bhp+. Back to Driving like a little girl for me :)

GT4s are slow in comparison to an MR2 Turbo. Massive drivetrain losses. They weigh 1500Kg.

Surprised you didn't find it in the bus lane.

A stock ct20b will make more power than any hybrid ct26.

A stage 2 ct26 hybrid is good for around 22psi and roughly 350bhp with supporting mods. Forged internals and ecu and the rest.

I wouldn't run more than 1.2 bar on a stock ct20b!

horse power is an overated figure when selling cars..granted if the thing is kicking out some mental figure then fair enough it acts as a good gauge as to what to expect and also what supporting work should be there with it..but when it comes to differnce between 270-300hp..i wouldnt worry about it..it will still go like stink and there are other factors that can help drive the car well than a 30hp differnce..(imo)

A stock ct20b is good for around 365 hp @ the wheels at the same boost pressure on the same built motor with ecu.

^ Actual fact, not a claim like every hybrid ct26 owner/seller.

bare in mind thats a record, ran on E85 fuel, 1.5bar AND lovely overrated US wheel horsepower figures.
still great either way, but not comparable to uk or aus/nz numbers.

tho i do agree there are wild claims from ct26 hybrids, and really, more folk to raise the boost a bit more on there ct20bs.
plenty of folks running more than 1.2bar in the US on them.

Groves, it all depends on how much boost your running?? i would say the ct26 hybrid is on par with the ct20b, so if your running 1bar, 260-270hp, 1.2bar, 280-300ish hp (at the flywheel).
its unlikely your "well into the 300s", certainly without a tune and knowing what boost your running.

Edit; sorry I actully am an idiot....Ive asked and it 1.05 low boost, and 1.1 high. Can tell ive never owned a turbo

As stated by greeny, proper engine management will make the most of your set up.

An aftermarket ECU is the single best modification you can do, at least until there's an option to work with the stock ECU. It really should be one of the first things on everybody's list when modifying a Toyota if you want to do it right IMO :)
