My original Mk1b wheels are in bad shape and in need of repaint. Buddy picked them today for blasting - idea was to soda blast but as soon as he saw them he said they need to be glass bead blasted.
Do you guys think it would be worthwhile to have the wheels powdercoated or just painted+lacquered? In either case they will be finished in std silver color.
Repainting of the original Mk1b wheels - to powder coat or not?

The inside of the teardrops are painted anthracite, imo they do not look right if just refurbed silver with this missing.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Depends how badly corroded they were. I had a set blasted and acid dipped, and then powder coated and it left the pits from corrosion left in, i.e. the powder coat did not fill the pits.

Yes, painting of the insides of the teardrops are on table as well. Saw also polished Mk1b wheels. Looked nice but probably not what I'd do for mine.
Will know how they look only after they are blasted. I reckon they may need some filler or something as well.

I always thought the anthracite was to dark depending of course what the colour of the car is. Charged is right, they just look wrong in silver. I did mine in Toyota 141 which was a colour used back in the 80's which keeps it the right era and is kinda gold/silver flippy in different light.
This is how mine are.

Glass bead blasting gave excellent results - corrosion was superficial and there's no pitting. Which is nice.
That Boddney's picture confirms it - the teardrops need to be dark for contrast.

That looks good. How deep are the pimples from the blasting? Looks like you may need to use filler primer or even flat the whole wheel back to get a smooth finish.
Re: Repainting of the original Mk1b wheels - to powder coat or not?
Not much deeper than what it would be with soda blasting, basically just a rough surface. Maybe needs just a coat of primer to even it out - I reckon paint would adhere hard on this surface.

Got the wheels today. They look blue in the pic but are actually silver - we don't have much sun up here at this time of year.
Need to get a set of studded tyres still.

What colour did you paint the teardrops ? The original colours is dark grey metallic - when I repainted a set a while ago I used smooth Hammerite dark grey.

Frankly, I don't know. Silver is Volvo S80 silver or such and the dark - not black - is just something darker he had in a can. Could have been a bit lighter in shade but it is what it is.

Top ones are mk1 and bottom ones look like mk3 wheel nuts

Long nuts look best with teardrops (mk1b wheels), short nuts look best with triangles (mk1a wheels). Both can be used with either at a push though.

I've been using mk3 nuts for ages, though I do have mk3 wheels hehe
Re: Repainting of the original Mk1b wheels - to powder coat or not?
May be worth searching around for a Powdercoaters. There is a place not too far from me that will do 15'' wheels at £15 each in a standard colour. Now £60 isn't a lot for 4x wheels to look new and stay in good condition. I've painted wheels before myself and it's cost me around £60 to buy the paint, laquer, primer and sandpaper and then i'd have to do some hard work and graft to have decent results sanding it back and painting again etc.
My opinion would be to let someone else do the hardwork, if it's cheap enough!
EDIT: Just realised your from Finland, so i'm not too sure what the cost will be for anything haha!

I'm using long nuts with Mk3 wheels
They're OK but short ones would look better

I hand-sanded then sprayed and lacquered my pepperpots about 3 years ago, I'm now looking at very tatty wheels again and the car hasn't done much mileage at all. I wouldn't reccommend skimping again.
