mk1a sunroof - major roof leak?!

Post by Sharky86 »

Hi all,

I've got a major roof leak that I only noticed from Summer 2012 (actually seeing the roof lining soaked; just above the windscreen) and during December the driver's side carpet has started to get soaked too :(

I've taken the car to the mechanic a couple of times already about it. He's done the hosepipe test, checked and cleared the drainage holes located under the sunroof. He's also fixed the plastic 'diaphragm' on the driver's door just in case the water was leaking in from there.

I've tried to read up on as much as I can, but the stuff I've read tends to talk about the leaks on the T-bar mode, so I'm wondering if there is anyone who has experienced a leaking roof in a sunroof model and managed to figure out what the problem was? Or if anyone knows what the problem could be? Could it be the linings on the sunroof/windcreen?

Cheers,
Sharky

hi, its more than likely you have corrosion on the roof top edge under the screen letting water in , or you might be lucky and the window screen bonding might have failed . remove the roof lining and inspect the window screen edge , you will see any rust when its off . if its leaking in from here the screen will have to come out and a repair made to seal it .

+1 on what Gary said you have a hole in the roof section that needs repairing. Either by welding it up or bodging it with liquid metal either way the screen has to come out and you will have to get some paintwork done after

Wow, I heard that this site was good, but you guys are a credit to it. I didn't expect such quick responses, so hats off to you both and many thanks.

My mechanic would've told me if there was corrosion anywhere in the roof so it seems like it may well be the bonds of either the screen/window/both from what you have both said. Will update when I get it sorted.

Sincere thanks again!

Hi,

I said I'd update and this may be useful to others.

I finally got my mechanic to look at the leak that I was getting near the inside rear view mirror. He removed the headlining and said that there was no rust or corrosion. He reckons that as I have a leak in the floor that condensation builds in the roof until it collects in the middle and can then start dripping. This stands to reason as the car has had the hosepipe test and can take a couple days of heavy rain before any water appears.

To add, I found that the possible cause of the floor leak is an apparently well-known rust point where the A-pillar meets the floor just behind the door hinge area. So I've had that repaired and fingers crossed I'm hoping that'll stop the water getting into the car finally!

Cheers,
Sharky
