Drive Shaft help please

Post by chevy »

Hi Guys

Driving home tonight after a little bit off acceleration my car lost drive. Its so dark and wet i could not see properly to see what was fully wrong. However i could see and feel the drivers side (o/s) drive shaft cv boot had come of the gearbox end. I tried to see if it would move but it grinds to loudly and I dont want to damage anything. So chaps I was wondering the following.

1. can i just try to knock it back in?
if not
2. how many types of drive shaft there are for rev2 turbos?
3. how can i tell if its got abs or not?
4. I need to put a plea out in parts wanted so what should i be asking for?

Thanks so much guys.

1. REV1/2 driveshafts are the same, i think REV3+ are different?
2. If you car doesn't have ABS then you can use either an ABS or Non ABS shaft.
3. Don't buy a LSD shaft if you dont have a LSD box as it wont fit in.
4. GT Four drive shafts also fit

Identify why it came out first.

2 inners - LSD and non-LSD
2 outers - ABS and non-ABS

So in total, 4 different shafts exist.

ABS warning light on dash whwn you switch on ignition. And sensor wires coming out of each hub.

Depends what the cause of the problem is.

Um really? I can see how the passenger side front driveshaft from a GT4 could fit but not the other 3! At the front they have a transfer box so run equal-length front shafts and the rears got to a central diff so are also equal-length.

Sorry this is incorrect Rev1 turbo drive shafts are different to rev 2+ drive shafts. Rev 1 turbo came with a non lsd box - anything with rev 2+ with an lsd will require rev2+ drive shafts.
Hope this helps a bit ( Peter and I have spent to many hours photographing, measuring and comparing turbo drive shafts)

Thanks for all your replies. Had a good chat with Peter today. He's very friendly and knowledgeable, and pointed me in the right direction.

When taking the shaft out its the CV joint Ring on the O/S is shaft has shattered.

I'm hoping he can sort me out with a ring or a shaft. Going to hopefully head up that way tomorrow.

Stoke on Trent to Barnsley on a sunday :( if the mr2 was working it would of been a great run out over buxton, glossop. Fantastic real drivers roads.

Again incorrect. REV1/2 had LSD as an option and only REV3+ came with LSD as standard.

AS previously stated, Non LSDs shafts will fit BOTH LSD & None LSD boxes.

LSD shafts will only fit in LSD boxes.

Simples :D

Indeed rev 1 did come with an option of an lsd - using rev 1 drive shafts as far as I'm aware.
Rev1 turbo and rev 2+ ( with lsd) have a different length splined area.
I'm not trying to be a pain here - I have some rev 1 shafts I would happily sell him BUT I dont want the chap to shell out on something that may not be suitable :thumleft:

Rev1 turbo and st185 drive shafts - same era of car
It looks like Peter of Sbits has come to the rescue here but thought I would post up the pictures as a reference in case any one else has this dillema.
As far as I'm aware The rev 2+ turbo lsd shaft was not available when the rev1 was comeing out of the factory so if you ordred yours with an lsd from new I believe you would still be using the rev1 shafts

Correct. There is only one part number for each of the Rev1 driveshafts, whether the car had an LSD or not. And TRD list/ed two different Turbo LSDs: Rev1 for use with Rev1 driveshafts, and Rev2+ for use with LSD shafts, thus ensuring no one would have to replace shafts when fitting a TRD LSD.

Part numbers for inner shafts:
43049-32030 - W/o limited slip - passenger side - non-LSD
41309-17030 - W/o limited slip - driver side - non-LSD

43049-17010 - W/limited slip - passenger side - LSD (12/91 on)
41309-17040 - W/limited slip - driver side - LSD (12/91 on)
