[Mk2] [Turbo] £50 Reward - Answer a Simple Question

Post by Peter Gidden »

Want to earn £50? Read on...

OK guys, calling for help from the IMOC Massif

When is an E153 LSD, not an E153 LSD?

Recently, i, plus Paul Woods, Bob Hatton and Nathan @ Century got involved with a problem fitting driveshafts to Martin's gearbox. Basically, they would not fit.

To cut a very long story very short, the diff he was sold as a MR2 Turbo LSD was not as described, i.e. not the correct unit. Whilst it fitted the gearbox perfectly, the driveshaft requirements are different.

Here is a drawing of a MR2 Turbo LSD:

And here is a drawing of what Martin was sold:

As you can see, the lengths of the driveshaft stubs are different. So whilst the diff fits an E153 gearbox, it will not work in an MR2 since no MR2 driveshafts will fit.

So, to win £50 in hard notes, simply tell us which applications, i.e. vehicles, this LSD will fit, and drive.

You probably know this already, there are 3 different TRD LSD's for the SW20, could this have anything to do with the different fitment?

41301-ST804 TRD LSD - 3S-GE
41301-SW202 TRD LSD - 3S-GTE (89.10-91.12)
41301-SW211 TRD LSD - 3S-GTE (91.12-99.10)

Not that i can see.

The 3S-GE won't fit, and both of the 3S-GTE LSDs are designed for OEM driveshafts.

The dimensions for driveshaft stubs in the mystery diff do not match either OEM non-LSD or LSD shafts.

Was it an LSD from a camry box? (Sometimes called the 351 for its higher ratios)

I know it's a long shot, but could it be from an imported Caldina GT4? No idea if they use stock Celica setup or not, but modified componants such as you describe here could have easily been changed for other specific models.

What other cars was the 3SGTE in?

This thread seems to say that there's a difference between the US and JDM axles.

Does the Genuine TRD Car use longer / different drive shafts due to the wider rear end??

If so Could it be from a Genuine TRD MR2??

Japanese spec ST185 with the close ratio box (seems unlikely due to 4WD but worth an ask)? Camry's already been said which was my other guess. I assume it's something more exotic.

Think they just use massive offsets, otherwise the suspension pickups/components would need to be altered to accept the lengthened driveshafts.

Still TRD you seem to suggest?

Don't know why it would be but perhaps from the TRD spyder if the susp components were modified to compensate for the drop top.

Guess #2 is Supra.

JZA80 supra, or gs300/400

Maybe even a tacoma/tundra?

They all share very similar part numbers, compared to the sw20 one.
