[Mk2] [Turbo] Need help - Intercooler fan

Post by pnicho »

Ok - my intercooler fan's not working.

Long story but upshot of it is that it's not working at all now. I do have my rogue fans actuated by the intercooler fan but even with these disconnected the intercooler fan is not running. I have disconnected the engine lid temp sensor so that the circuit is open but the fan is still not coming on.

Does anyone with a lot more knowledge than me on the MR2 wiring know which fuses, relays and connectors I should be checking to make sure that it's not one of these that has gone?

I appreciate any help in advance.

Thanks

Phil

Fuse AM2 supplies power to the fan relay coil via the ignition switch.

VENT fuse supplies power to the fan relay contacts.

GUAGE and ECU-IG both supply power to the fan control box in the boot.

If all are OK, and you are confident your wiring is good, suspect the control box.

I presume you did use additional relays for the Rogue fans?

Hey Peter,

Thanks for that.

Yes I did use an additional relay for the Rogue fans.

Where abouts is the control box in the boot?

Where is the fan relay do you know, are these also likely suspects?

Thanks

Black box, just to the right of ECU loom where it enters through bulkhead.

Fan relay is the nearest to N/S in rear fuse box.

Relay is 99.9% reliable. Control box is much less so, which is why i said it is main suspect if all else is OK.

Hey Peter,

Thanks for your help.

Long and short of the story is today is the first time I have been able to look at the car since yesterday.

Investigation carried out so far:

Find black box in boot and check connections - only to find black box isn't there (found in the boot 30 seconds later).

Plugged back in. Checked all fuses etc etc and everything is good, still no fans.

With engine off but ignition on I can hear the relay switching when I flick my switch (still no fans).

When the engine is running with black box connected the engine bay fan warning light is constantly on.

Is this a sign that the black box is dead? I don't think bouncing around in the boot since Saturday will have helped it.

Thanks in advance.
