Smelling a bit clutchy...

Post by Shifty6Speed »

The car supposedly had a new clutch fitted about 5500 miles ago (about 3 years ago now)... However i've noticed on the last few journeys that it's smelling quite clutchy when i get out of the car after a run... It doesn't appear to be slipping at all though at the moment and i should hope not too!

Any idea's folks?

A slightly worried Shifty...

Check your brake discs for heat. Seized caliper will smell the same as clutch slipping.

Oh right... Not sure about the discs, i know the pads are brand new and i've just checked the paperwork for the clutch... it was done at a Toyota main dealer in late 2009 and has only done 3450 miles since!!!

I know the discs have a little bit of rust around the top, but it's only surface rust... It has new calipers and pads all round! I'm confused...

There is a squeak from one of the back wheels at very slow speed but i don't notice it once the car has been running for a few hundred yards... Curiouser and curiouser...

Discs should always be done with pads - yours weren't?

Yes, the discs and pads were changed at the same time but it's been standing a while before i picked it up, hence why there was some surface rust which is now gone!

And discs don't need changing with pads all the time unless they are warped or worn down too far etc... A new set of either OEM discs or uprated discs should last the life of at least 2-3 sets of pads (depending on the density of the pad as to how long they last etc :)

lol... Yeah, when i do a lot of track days (when i can afford to) the discs tend to not last as long as the pads, but for general road use and pootling about without hammering the brakes everywhere, they're fine for at least 2 sets of pads... I don't like to push things to the limits though, i'd rather buy new discs for the price they cost than risk running them down too far and thus screwing up the life/wear of the pads too...
