coolant temp connector

my engines running quite rich I suspect the engine temp sensor so i bought one to replace it ,but cant get the dam connector off lol anybody had this before ?

it has a wire locking clip on it, you just have to push it inwards to release it, if thats unclear you can remove the clip by levering it out with a small flat bladed screwdriver, be careful not to drop it because it will need refiiting to lock the connector in place

yes i know this but its not quite that simple lol because of the location and the way its turned its very very difficult to get to the back of the connector to push the wire and release the plug ,ive not posted something that i havent tried for days to resolve lol the dam thing just wont budge !!!

Have you got a very small hook? or pick if so flick the metal clip off the connector but dont loose it . then the plug should just pull off. then put the clip back on the connector before you push it back on the sensor. If you do loose the clip i've got loads here on old looms. I've even got a sensor you've just bought

ive sort of tried that but couldnt get the dam metal clip out but I will try again tomorrow afternoon , the engines running great but it does smell quite rich ,well very rich lol ,i keep thinking about buying one of those gunson gastesters but they go for so much on ebay lol

the coolant temp sensor cost me 14quid so its worth a punt to see if it clears it up ,ive done the old tyre valve cap in the aav hole lol with a 5 mm hole ,the car now starts up and revs at 1500 instead of 2200 revs ,but this rich running problem is more noticable when the engines warm and been on a run ,it idles great now at 900 rpm when warm but smells very rich

Have you checked the colour of the plugs?

yeah its the same green sensor ,got the dam thing off ,eventully ,for a simple connector that was bloody hard it sprung out and landed the other side of the garage but i managed to find it and it and the plug are undamaged lol

then looked in the tool cabinet and didnt have a 19mm spanner dam what a spanner eh lol

I know I had a socket but it didnt clear the plug ,so just bought a 19mm spanner off ebay it'll be here thursday ,tools are so cheap on ebay and theyre allways better than the crap you get in halfrauds and b&q

Halfords tools are cheap if you have a trade card and get 50% discount on them. Remember they have a life time warranty on them. I bought a set of impact sockets from b&q for £12 the other month and they seem to be able to take the abuse i've given them. I also had a 1/2" ratchet I bought from Brown Brothers and its out lasted my snap on one and it has had real abuse like scaff bars put on the end of it to give more leverage etc

coolant temp sensor replaced and i'm pretty sure thats fixed the rich running smell ticks over loverly now

The coolant temp sensor on my car has a different type of connector

No spring clip, just a bit of plastic as shown in the pic below

Press in & the connector comes off

The pic is the start injector timer same type of connector as the coolant temp except for colour

The Mk1 doesn't just come as a Mk1a and a Mk1b, there is a crossover "revision" between the two, 86-87, when Toyota used Mk1a stuff on Mk1b bodyshells.

Your engine is a Mk1a, in a Mk1b chassis, a "crossover" car.
