Engine Belts

Post by elbon50 »

I need a new camshaft drive belt & alternator belt

Wondering if the ones that Camskill sell are top quality :?:

Or if I should play safe & go to Mr T :-k

I would only go to MrT. Not worth skimping IMO.

Also make sure you buy a new tensioner (the expensive bit!).

The Alternator belt is less critical of course though I would just get it from MrT as it's not that expensive anyway.

Somewhat misguided.

Toyota belts are not made by Toyota, they are made by Mitsuboshi, now that's not a typo, i don't mean Mitsubishi.

Mitsuboshi belts are of no better quality or have no more longevity than a Gates belt, both will easily see 60k.

I use Gates on all my engines, and they will last just as long as the Mitsuboshi belt but they are much cheaper to buy.

Toyota engines are all non interference, so it makes no sense to buy the OEM belt, you're just throwing money away in my opinion.

Toyota make very little of the OEM parts, it's all rebranded from other makers and the price hoisted up.

Very Much this^^^^^^^^^^^
if you want to invest in Toyotas future then go ahead, but Gates are OEM for many manufacturers and as such are top notch, Mitisuboshi are OEM for Toyota and are again top quality but at a premium in a Toyota branded box

Ah yes, many thanks all, Gates it is then :thumleft:

That's the info I needed

Is it absolutely essential to replace the tensioner bearing as well as the belt ?

My engine is just coming up to 60K

Very low mileage fro a 23 year old :)

You don't have to change the tensioner, but you need to make sure the bearing is okay.

Mark did actually re-pack my one to save a bit of money and it was fine. You really don't want one of these seizing for obvious reasons, but being non interference makes you worry a lot less about this kind of thing.

I admit, just had cambelt done on another of my cars (interference engine this one) and went for the Gates belt over OEM.

So, Paul has a point.

I bought one from Camskill - it covered 56k and when we replaced it for (recent engine) it looked in fab condition. Tensioner was fine as well.

Alternator belt I picked up from my local Unipart and that's been fine for the last 70k.

For the price of the part i always replace the water pump at the same time as doing the belt. Its possible to do with the belt on but while everything is stripped down worth doing.

Received my Gates alternator belt today from Import Car Parts

Very nice item

They also stock Gates camshaft drive belts with or without tensioner bearing and water pumps
