Insurance for Turbo Conversion Car

Post by tsango »

Hi everyone

Just after someone who has done a turbo conversion and has got insurance.

I have a REV5 1998 car and looking to get it Turbo'd up this year, but i am pretty confident Admiral Insurance will faint if I mention this modification, hence I need to get some quotes from companies.

Any suggestions?

One other thought is to leave the conversion until next year when the car will be 15 years old and get classic insurance on it.

Again, anyone had experience of this at all?

Thanks for your help

Like any modification it limits the number of insurance companies you can use. Since I had my conversion done I've used both A-Plan and Sky, switching when one is cheaper than the other. You could talk to them to get a quote before you decide to go ahead with the conversion.

A-Plan - 01635 874 646
Sky - 03303 331 250

Great. Thanks Chris. I used A-Plan about 22 years ago when I first started driving. I had an 850cc mini back then! Ha ha!!

The main modified car insurance companies to the best of my knowledge are;

Classic line
Adrian flux
Sky
A-Plan

Im with Adrian Flux although I know a lot of people are very positive about Classic line, and I will be contacting them next year :thumleft:

Conversion insurance costs arent as bad as youd think. With my new engine in (V6 VVTI) it is only going to cause an imcrease of just over £200 a year (from my na insurance). Im going to be paying under £500 a year with the engine swap and all mods declares...

Like anything just shop around and phone a few places :thumleft:
Selling up my highly modified and restored Rev 1 V6 3.0 1MZ-FE VVTi

Green light are new to the game and charge £0 for all modifications except ludicrously expensive ones. And bhp increases... BUT. They're all petrol heads. Pretty cool niche company & knowledgable.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

At the moment I pay £670 for my 1998 Rev 5 UK car but being a second car I have zero no claims on it so I guess that will push it up.

I was on a multi car with Admiral but I am sure they will be horrified at sticking a turbo engine it it, even though they won't agree a value and surely doing these mods without being able to agree a value means you're more likely to be careful not to be in a accident, or be slack with security.

I have already spend £2500 on the inital £2000 purchase so I would stand to lose a few grand if the thing was stolen, or written off.

If I can get on classic insurance then at least I can agree a value.

Thanks for your help...! I will ring round a few and put some results on this post for reference.

New to which game exactly? I had my heavily modified Charade Turbo insured with them 11 years ago.

New to the clubs I'm a member on. Yes I believe they started 96 of I recall... But they're very much unmentioned in these chats!

I'd certainly never heard of them before, must remember to try them out at renewal time. Thanks synXero.

Yeah I'm insured with Greenlight, they specialize in modified cars and also offer track day cover from as little as £50 for the day (for policy holders).

Thats good, what excesses apply?

Most of the places I've tried charge at least £70 a day with a huuuuuge excess.

Yes Admiral did pass out when I mentioned the conversion to them!!

I got a very good quote from Green Light for £579

I will give A Plan and Classic Line a go too but at the moment I am happy with £579 especially as that is cheaper than I already pay now!!

Sky Insurance for me - highly recommended.

No problems covering my remapped Spider and when I bought the 156 V6, they allowed me to 'mirror' my existing no claims bonus on the second car, which as a result only cost me £440 to insure.

I am 29, live in a bad postcode for insurance and have 6 years NCB.

Could Admiral give you a quote?

Ive stuck with Bell/Admiral for years now, always found their customer service brilliant, uk call centre (actually in Newport and Cardiff) so no communication barrier.
You've had some great quotes there though!!

Older than the hills that one Alan.. useful to a point but insurers use their own statistics to create area ratings..
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.
