Hi all,
I have just joined the site as I'm hoping to get a Rev 3 turbo at some point during the next year. I have wanted one since I was a teenager but the time has never seemed right. I've now decided the time will probably never be perfectly right and I'm going to get one regardless.
I have been looking through the ads on various sites for a few years, just keeping an eye on the market and can't help noticing that over the last year or two the number of decent tintop turbo models for sale has rapidly fallen.
I really want a Rev 3 tintop but they seem to be very rare now! Does anyone have any insight whether these cars are just being kept longer by their owners or have they maybe been broken or written off?
Where have all the decent Mk2 turbo tintops gone?!!

Welcome to the forum
Have you looked in the MR2s For Sale section?

Any of those take your fancy?
Why a tin top anyway? The T-bar is even better in my opinion.

Re: Where have all the decent Mk2 turbo tintops gone?!!
I think generally now they're either cherished long term cars, ragged about as stripped out track cars or broken the moment any costly repairs are needed.
My rev 2 tin-top I've just realised has cost me £1600 (almost as much as the car cost me) to get it back to a mechanically sound (e.g. everything working as it should and new tyres) point this year and may cost me a little more next year, but I don't plan on selling it any time soon.
The cars are worth so little these days that many owners of tired examples can get more for breaking than for selling on. The only positive aspect of this is that, as time goes on (say 5-10 years from now) numbers of sound examples will start to decline sufficiently for them to become 'a desirable' classic.

Thanks for the replies!
The Yellow one did catch my eye! Wouldn't be my first choice of colour but it does look very clean. I'm not quite at the stage of being ready to buy money wise yet though. If it's still about when I am it's one I shall want to have a look at!
I agree Marlowe, there seem to be a few about that people are breaking instead of repairing. It's a real shame and surely they have to become desirable soon!
I think it's a timeless shape and hopefully I will have one just in time for the values to rise!

I want a tin top really as I wouldn't really use a T-bar roof. Fair play to those that have them but for me it just seems like extra weight right at the highest point of the car.

Ah so there are some being hidden away rather than broken!
What spec and condition is it, if you don't mind me asking?

My pleasure Draven!
Re: Where have all the decent Mk2 turbo tintops gone?!!
My immaculate (bodywork wise) Mk2 tintop turbo . Bodywork and panels are in better shape than some I have seen a decade older. 1 bit of surface rust in boot under carpet but have cleaned and waxoiled it.
Only paid £1200 3 months ago for it as well.

Wow, that does look immaculate! Especially for the price you paid!
Nice find, Well done!

There are more scruffy mk2 mr2s out there than good ones and to find one pretty standard is extremely difficult. What sort of budget have you got if you dont mind me asking?

I don't mind at all!
Budget is a bit hypothetical at the moment as I haven't saved anything yet! If I saw one that I really liked I'm sure I could get a loan to cover the costs of buying and insuring one that was up for around 3-4k.
