Work out which direction should close it, unhook it, push it to max travel in correct direction and try it.

No air con system will work if there is hot water flowing through the heater matrix.

Thought I'd give an update on this....

I jad a go at unhooking the cable and pushing the valve to the shut position as indicated on the top of the thing and left the air-con running for 15-20 mins. Unfortunately it made no real difference to the air con temp i.e. it still wasn't cold. It did however mean that I got no hot air coming from the vents when turning the heating up - which I guess is normal.

I then decided to remove the centre console panel and the heater control unit and couldn't find any trace of the cable. Am I correct in thinking it should actually connect to the heater control unit to the end of the slider mechanism as pictured below?

Either way, I'm guessing even if I do manage to somehow reconnect the cable somehow (though I must admit I have no idea how when I can't even find the damn thing) it's not going to solve my air con temp issues...

So, any ideas?

You wont find the cable attached the heater control panel....it goes somewhere between the heater matrix and the plastic air outlet in the centre console.

If you stick your head up under the drivers footwell you will see the cable come through the bulkhead. It then goes between two plastic bits.

Turn the ignition to 'on' without starting the engine, turn the fan blower off. You should be able to hear the servo motor for the heater control valve move when you move the temp control slider past each increment.

The slider mechanism controls the cable directly in UK cars. Climate systems use the signal from that potentiometer (circled) to control the cable via a servo.
