[Mk2] [Turbo] Steering wheel

Post by scleary121 »

Can anyone point me toward a guide that shows how to change the original steering wheel on a mk2 rev1 please?
I'm sure I have a rev1 boss with the disc bit for the horn and that my car is a rev1 but for some reason there is a plastic plug pointing out at me once I have taken the wheel off that won't allow me attach the boss onto the spline.

Grrrr I thought this was going to be an easy job

Have a gander at my build thread as there are pics on there

Basically take the front cover off and there is a large nut holding the steering wheel in. Undo this but do not remove it fully. Grab the steering wheel and give it a solid hard yank towards you.

The nut stops it flying off and breaking your nose, lol.
Then undo the nut, remove the steering wheel and replace it with what ever you want.

Obviously if you have an airbag disconnect the battery and leave it for a couple of hours before attempting this :D

All in all it's an easy 10 minute job

And as Karls car doesn't have PAS he wouldn't have one :)

If its got the plastic bit sticking out ,thats for the horn connection ,and its late rev1 /rev2 fitment
From the cars ive had only early rev1s had the flat ring for the horn ,

Rev2 fitment ,you need a boss that looks like this

Image

not like this with a flat bottom

Image

design differs between manufacturer ,but basically you need one with the cutout for the horn connection

Thanks for the info BLZ!
I must be that unlucky person that has a rev1 car with a rev2 attachment. Great!

Sorted it.
I cut the earthing ring off the rev1 boss and used the original plug/wire to the horn button and then earthed the born button to the spline.
Winner. Thanks for the help everyone
