strange noise after turning the engine off (rev3 turbo)

Post by jasongtr »

never had an mr2 turbo before (had another turbo car but was under a more sealed bonnet)

anyway when the engine is switched off theres what i can describe an air leak that gets progressively quieter, it only lasts 10-15 seconds, almost as if there is air under pressure leaking/venting

is this normal or does it indicate a boost leak or some sort, car drives fine and made that noise before i changed the IC / hoses and clamps

any ideas

+1

Mine sounds like the car's still slowly rolling. Most worrying when you first hear it :?

Perfectly normal I believe :)

just checked, seems to be coming from lower down around the turbo area but cant be 100% sure, id say it not from the canister though

edit, it also does it if you turn it on from cold and switch off after only a few seconds

Strange, I take it you are not losing any water?

I am no mechanic but maybe check for exhaust leaks (around the turbo aswell) along with vac leaks around that area. Just to throw an idea out there, it could be the turbo spinning down and as the engine is off, the leaks are more audible. Vac or exhaust.

Just check everything around that area, starter motor, BOV, it could even be the intercooler fan?

Good luck!

not noticed any water loss, doubt its the ic fan

does sound like a little bit of pressure of some sort escaping

Mine makes a bit of a wheezing sound when I turn it off - bit like a duck call!

good description - wheezing

all good, as long as theres another out there doing it and mine is now running 18psi there cannot be much of a boost leak if any

My Celica makes a similar noise after you turn the engine off, I always put it down to the low pressure air in the manifold equalising with atmospheric pressure, the noise is produced by it flowing through the aftermarket filter.

With the extended pipework in the tubby and increased resistance (turbo blades, I/C etc) it probably would take longer than my N/A to equalise hence the 10-15 second 'slurp'.

Someday I'll stick the vacuum gauge I have on the inlet manifold and see if my theory is correct.

that makes sense, certainly doesnt seem to affect the running that ive noticed
maybe its just the car sounding sad after turning it off

sounds relatively normal - both of my na's have sounded bit like jet engine shutting down  but both had inductions

Is it a 'bubbling' sound ?

If so, it's quite normal for the coolant in the turbo water pipes to boil over when the engine is shut off. The water absorbs the heat from the turbo, and because it's no longer circulating, it makes a 'bubbling' noise as it boils
