255 40 17s ?

Post by Herts66 »

My rear wheels have 255 40 17 tyres. Occasionally the osr tyre rubs the arch if I hit a bump at speed.
Are the tyres too big and should I change to 245/235s 35s or should I be looking at the osr shock?
The NSR seems fine
The car is a 97 rev4 N/A on std original suspension.
Any ideas?

You have 2 options. Change the tyre size or roll the arches to accommodate the wider tyre.

Also depends on the offset of the wheels. If the offset is too low, even with a different tyre size, it may still catch the arch.

What's the specs on your rear wheels? Width/offset etc?

Roll the arches, a whole lot cheaper than replacing both rear tyres.

And check your alignment, all things being equal both tyres should be rubbing!

Maybe they would both rub but I havent had a passenger in a while!

Thinking about getting the arches rolled as I am sure that will cure it.

When I had 17x9 ET35 with 255/40 both arches would rub the tyres over bumps with just me in the car. Seems odd yours only rubs one side. :-k

Either way rolling will sort it, it did for me :thumleft:

My MR2 has 17x9 et38 rears with 225/40/R17 as well, but it has never rubbed, and it's still on stock suspensions. It's possible that the components are the originals that shipped with the car, but they perform fin and are balanced across the axles so I'm happy enough.

Yep, and thats why it doesn't rub. Not only is a 225/40 30mm narrower than a 255/40, the face of the tyre sits 12mm lower.

I had 235/40/17 on 9" rims ages ago and they looked like rubber bands! :o

Ditto, they looked horribly skinny compared to a 255/40.

Yep, 255/40 look perfectly at home on a 9x17 :thumleft:

Well I had the arches rolled by Phil from arch enemy - all ok now and they look great.
Fronts are 215/40/17s on an 8" rim - they look stretched and the rim is pretty exposed. 225s on the front next but they will need a 5mm spacer?

You'd want to look at a 225/35 to ensure the tyre doesnt foul the spring cup

I think you're right. Do you think I need a space though?

Possibly. I had ET35 8J up front and the rim and tyre(215/40) edge was VERY close to the strut body.

What ET are your 8J?

ET42 and I have about 7-10mm between the bottom cup and the strut vertical.

Should be ok without a spacer. There was literally 2-3mm between the wheel rim and strut body and the same between the tyre face and spring cup when I had the 8j ET35.

Dammit I should have read my post properly before submitting and going away for a week :) My car isn't mistreated with dumb tyre sizes!! I typed 225, I meant 255

Actual tyre and wheel sizes:
17x8 et32 with 215/45R17 on the front (Falken 452)
17x9 et38 with 255/40R17 on the rear (Falken 912)

The front is a little bit stretched by maybe 10 mm each side of the wheel, but not looking stupid with it. I've just to take care when parking and that's about it. The edge of the wheel is ~3mm proud of the front wing edge at normal position but it tucks in as it goes up under load.

No rubbing anywhere, but it is a matter of mm to spare on the front with the standard stock rev1 suspension spring cup.
