5w30 oil or something else?

Post by dutch_ed »

Since a few months I own a 1995 SW20 rev.3 GT turbo. To change oil every 5000Km there is written on the sticker to use 5W30.
Is it possible to use oil that have another grade? like 0W30 or 0W40?

I know to use the Fully synthetic but that's all the knowledge i have.

If you want a decent 5w-30 then we have plenty here.

Look at the Motul 8100 or 300v 5w-30 for top quality oils

I have Mibil 1 0w-40 grade in mine at the moment with no problems, best suited to the winter though. Noone has suggested this is abad grade yet, and works well. :-)

I went to the toyota garage to ask which the best oil would be for the car and i was told that semi-synthetic 5w-30 was the stuff to use, i thought that fully synthetic would have been the stuff I wanted but i got the recomended and did a full oil change. Runs perfect and the engine is also alot quieter, i can cruise at 80mph and hardly hear the engine, (although this may be becasue of the road noise) :salut: also preformance is pretty good.

You will be fine on 5w-30 though full synthetics are better, there are not many 5w-30 full synthetics but plenty of good 5w-40 full synthetics to look at in the future.

The 5w-30 grade is what is recomended for all new toyotas, so remember that the garage will recomend what they currently put in the new cars as they will have it in stock.

Yep,

There in the right area which is more then can be said for many dealers.

Assuming you dont have a roadster 5w-40/10w-40/10w-50/15w-50 are all fine depending on mods and use etc.

Hi:

The problem is there is SO much nonsense talked about oil, what you have to do is read the opinions of the people who actually design and produce the stuff.

The original poster was questioning about the use of a 5W-30 oil in his MR2 MKII turbo. Here is a quote by MOTUL, one of the most respected names in oil manufacture:

Quote------------------------

Question: There are " energy economy " oils. What is the relationship between a lubricant and fuel consumption?

MOTUL answer: The viscosity of an oil comes from the internal friction within the oil: the more viscous the oil, the more internal friction. By using a low viscosity oil (generally SAE 0W-30) in an engine, the losses caused by friction internal to the lubricant are reduced: the petrol consumption is therefore enhanced by a few percent. However caution should be used, this type of oil is not suitable for all engines. Check that the vehicle manufacturer does in fact recommend this viscosity.

end quote-------------------

Well, I think that is perfectly clear. So all we need do is see what Toyota recommend and it 'aint 0W-30 unless you happen to live in the Antarctic, lol.

Regards,
Jim

I think you'll find that 5w-30 is a recommended viscosity for this car.

It's certainly listed.
