Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
My Rev 3 Turbo has always shot flames from the zaust when the HKS SSQV dumps.(Orange glow behind me at night)
It came fitted when I had it but i've wondered is there actually ANY benefit apart from the noise of the HKS SSQV
I'm obviously getting unburnt fuel sent down the exhaust and wondered the pros and cons of the two BOVs?
You drive. You drive. I think there's something wrong with me.
I can get one delivered for about £60
As it'll be in use most days over summer I just want to get a reliable car. The stock performance is perfect as far as I'm concerned, although if I win the lottery that might change

So on a REV3 there is absolutely no reason to get a factory BOV apart from losing the noise?
If i was gaining some mpg or reliability i'd consider going back but it just seems to be, one makes a sexy noise (or snoring noise) and the other doesn't?

Rev 1/2 - Stock bov
Rev 3+ - Stock or atmos, depending on whether you want the noise or not.
Block the ports off and run without one if you want maximum performance/simplicity.
Use OEM if you want silence (unless you have removed the stock intake/resonator, in which case you will be 'goose honked' to death)
Use the SSQV if you like the noise.
Turbo spools faster with a stock valve.
Haven't you wondered why it's more complicated than an aftermarket valve?
its actually quite a clever bit of kit.

+1.
The driveability is like night and day. Just have to put up with the stupid noise changing gears.
No more having to fill the entire pipework and intercooler from the turbo to throttle plate with air every shift.

When you say no BOV, do you mean run with the factory setup?

He means no BOV at all.
As Luke has already suggested, not very clever. Compressor stall every gearchange, and always a risk of shaft/compressor wheel breakage.

I have a friend who's a very experienced race engineer, he never runs a BOV on any of his race cars and says the only reason manufacturers factory fit BOV's is to minimise the noise of the turbo stall.
I've read loads of debates on the subject for and against and after 15 years of turbo car ownership I'm still non the wiser

I'm still yet to read a decent argument from the 'for' camp.
The forces are tiny in the grand scheme of what a turbo endures, and only act upon the compressor wheel, so shaft damage is extremely unlikely.
For those who quite like the sound of compressor stall, crank your speakers up:

Recirc or No bov will give best performance
Will a Rev2 Recirc fit a Rev3? The Bov part is the same but is the recirc pipe section the same shape? I have a complete one for sale anyway
Also, Is your SSQV Genuine or a Replica? Theres loads of cheap chinese replicas out there.
Oh and you can get a recirc adaptor for the SSQV
