[Mk2] [NA] Camshafts - For the stupid (me)

Hey guys,

Just looking to get some advice and the low-down on all things Camshafty !
I sort of understand what they do, and at least the results they can produce but as much info as possible, especially in relation to the NA would be fantastic !

If I bought a set of cams for my car, what else do I need to purchase?
who would I need to see about fitting?
and what is it likely to cost all in ?

(note: my car has a ECU J.Mec Sports in there already but apart from the RPM being raised not sure what else it does? - and even if applicable to this !)

This is for a car that will eventually be a track only car, and I think I'm going to keep it as an N/A, so I'd like to treat it a little here and there

There are gains to be had with cams but mostly as you try to develop power high through the rev range, the combination of long duration cams and larger valves will see more air move through the engine. To get the best from these changes you will need a mappable ecu - we could help with a new piggback system we are trying. For even better gains, remove the head have it ported and polished and a damn good clean up. Cams alone wont blow you away.

I've got that J.Mec Sports ECU in there which I think came off a car at your place a while back. No idea if it's mappable but if you're developing a piggyback system anyway

Do you know who does that locally to us ?
And a guestimate cost of such a service ?

Once again, these are things which will come over time but I like to plan ahead a little, save here and there.



And just to add:
'cams of 264° of duratio the powercurve starts to fall down at +- 8200rpm' - MR2DIE4
Which if I bought cams anyway would be about right for my ECU.

What's repro & blank ?

Also I noticed someone said it's worth getting the Vernier Pulleys as well, do you also need the gasket and valve springs as well ? If so, what's the difference between double and single ?

I presume piper would just sell the whole thing as a kit but I was curious if you had to have it all at the same time ?

Blanks - machined from new

Pullies allow fine tuning which is pretty much always needed.

Double springs avoid valve float at high rpm.

Gaskets - probs worth doing but not sure what ones they're referring to.

Reprofiled cams will need 16 new shims so ad this cost. With blanks you should get away with re using a lot of the shims you already have.

You can start with just the cams then build up the rest. I have some 264 regrinds that I intend to fit wiht the stock pulleys and ECU to start with, there is a little adjustment on the stock pulleys so I will get as close as possible to the lift at TDC figure the manufacturer suggests.

That's good to know as I'd prefer to do little bits over time IF I don't go the turbo route.
I know some things it'll just make sense to do in one go but not always possible

ROUGHLY, how much, or how long would you say it would take somewhere to fit the cams, and potentially the vernier pulleys ?
