[Mk2] [Generic] Gaz's clocks led upgrade

Post by gazrev1tubby »

Following on from my heater controls. I decided to have bash at the main speedo\clocks unit.

This was much, much trickier, and took nearly 3 days

The clarity is perfect, the camera just doesn't pick out the quality. Unfortunately my good camera is dead, so iphone pics are all I have

200 led's and lots of patience, creates this :D

That looks really good. How exacty is this achieved? and how do you stop the different colour leds light bleeding into eachother?

Nice mod :thumleft:

I need to look into some new bulbs as I have a periodically flickering one on the speedo that's irriating the heck out of me at the moment. Any recommendations as to where to get the bulbs?

Cheers guys :thumleft:

I used 3mm led's for this conversion, as mentioned above - nearly 200 of them !

With standard led's, light bleeding isn't really a problem - as it's focused light. Wide angle bulbs would probably be a bit brighter, but you'd then have bleeding to contend with.

Basically, to do it, you need to remove the gauges and strip them down to just the clear polycarbonate screen. Then, mark where all the dashes and numerals are, and glue led's in the correct locations.

Some of the numerals - mainly the triple figures on the speedo - have 5 leds to get the lighting correct, without 'hot spots'.

Also, I used resistors on every 3 bulbs, to avoid getting any 'cold spots'.

It's a very laborious job, and extremely fiddly, but the results are incredible.

As clear as speedhuts, but completely personal with respect that any light combination can be used :thumleft:

And cost about £15 :D

I've got a spare set sitting on my floor waiting for me to sort out.

Got any pics of the build ? Massively interested in this.

Yeah, I'd love to see how this is accomplished as well. Take any pictures whilst you were doing it? Maybe a cheeky how-to guide?

Looks great either way. :)
