This is now fitted to my car but only solved the knock for 20 miles.

Should the driveshafts have in and out movement from the gearbox? Im getting about 10mm movement and a knocking noise if I pull on them by hand.

Trying to decide if I should carry on faffing around with the driveshaft bolts etc or if my diff has a problem.

Symptoms are a loud knocking noise from over my left shoulder when driving on every rotation of the wheel. I had a stone in one tyre and the knock happened at the same time as the stone hit the road.

Drivers side wheel bearing also appears to be shot but I dont think that is the cause of this knocking?

Is it the exhaust causing the knocking perhaps ?

The rubber part of the exhaust hanger at the passenger end of the silencer came off a while ago

There were loud banging, knocking noises from behind my left shoulder

Nope, had it in the air today for a good luck underneath. Also had a friend look over it who agreed with me.

The driveshaft I have just fitted is shagged.
Both wheel bearings are shot, drivers side especially so
Some sort of bearing in the diff has gone meaning that the driveshaft spins off centre at the gearbox end.

Boo.

That'll be the diff carrier that's worn. Got mine replaced with a second hand one by a gearbox place (many years ago when I had nowhere to work on my car), was about £300 IIRC.

New diff carriers are hideously expensive.

Did yours make a loud bang / clunk noise on every rotation?

Sounds like a replacement gearbox will be easier than anything else.

No, but it was picked up on an MOT. The tester didn't like it, because it wasn't a failure.

Another gearbox is bound to be an easier option.

My current gearbox was 99 pence from eBay :)

You can be lucky or unlucky on price

Can be tricky to be sure you're getting a good one though :?

From what you say it seems the driveshaft you bought was a duffer :?:
