Are they cheaper for a MK2 then?

The number of companies who do suspension for a Mk1a is dwindling to zero. I think KYB are the only ones who do shocks to fit a mk1a.

I don't think the Mk2 suspension kits are any cheaper than Mk1s at the moment.

Ahh cool. I take it that it works out a lot cheaper doing this mod than spending £749 on BC Racing ones?

If mk2 struts fit a mk1b then I can't see any reason why doing something like this wouldn't let you fit them to a mk1a:

There's more choice from the MK2 range of suspension products and probably more chance of finding something second hand.

New prices won't be much different though. IIRC Mk2 Tein coilovers are over £1k new. :-k

I was wondering why people would do this tbh, you can get BC Coilovers for a MK1 anyway, and I have a set of Ledas on mine. I am almost certain if you asked Meister R they could come up with a set too (I can ask them as I know the guy that makes them if anybody is really interested).

I guess if you've got a cheap second hand set of MK2 ones then it might be worth it if you're a bit handy. But otherwise can't see why you would?

Oh that's interesting, the last I'd heard I'd be looking at shifting over a whole 1b suspension set up. I think even I might manage fitting a few spacers. :thumleft:

Not an option really unfortunately.

I'm going to do it because I rate the quality of tein and kw to name two, above those of bc and d2, and i prefer the adjustability of coilovers. And im a bit of a brand whore.....

I emailed LEDA for a suspension quote. This is a copy and paste of the reply.
I sent:
Hi LEDA,
I am currently searching for a set of coilovers/aftermarket suspension for the AW11(87-89 shape) mr2. From what i can find BC's are the only makes i can find of companies that make them but a search on one of the forums i visit show you make/have made coilovers to fit.
Many thanks
Alex Paulukiewicz

the reply;-

Alex,
Leda can supply a set of two front coilover struts and two rear coilover dampers for the MR2 at £1525 for the full set + carriage and applicable taxes. These would be single adjustable and oil filled. Springs are additional and prices vary depending upon specification, however it is best to allow £50 per spring. All Leda shocks are fully repairable and serviceable, and can be upgraded to higher specifications to include multiple damping adjusters, remote canisters and gas/oil fill.

Currently supply of new shocks is approximately 8 to 12
weeks from order due to current volume of work.

Regards,

xxx xxxxxxxx

Ive been looking for a set, i really want them, but i haven't got that kind of cash to spend on them.
Id be interested T, If they need a car for measurements or anything also providing they are not miles away id be willing to help out!

Yeah I must admit my Ledas were £2K...double adjustables though.

I will ask Meister R.

BC Coilovers aren't half bad actually, have been pleasantly surprised on the racing roadster.

i know that XYZ and BC do MK1 coilovers. i have been thinking about those a while back, but then decided to go the KYB+Eibach (apex?) standard suspension route. but if my standard suspension parts are rotten, then BC it is :D

There are also other companies who do coilovers for the Mk1b

If you have a Mk1A just switch to Mk1B rear subframes and hubs, then you too can do this.

I've lashed out £1300 on a set of KW version 2's that are only available for the Mk2, for my Mk1 project, and the Mk1 V8 has Mk2 Tein superstreets with EDFC, although to be fair i didn't swap the topmounts on those for Mk1.

The only pitfall using Mk2 stuff is wether or not you can swap the top mount easily, so far i haven't failed to do it, but i'm Paul Woods and i rock  <--- that's my new siggy.

Seriously though, just be sure before buying, some of the Mk2 damper tubes might be thicker diameter than Mk1 top mount bearings, so some machining might be needed, but every set i've adapted have worked.
