Coilovers on Mk1s

Post by Charged »

So, it looks like coilovers for a Mk2 are an option for us all..

Can anyone clarify what needs to be done to make them fit? Has anyone done it in the UK or abroad? Any reading anywhere?

Cheers

Paul Woods has done it. Apparently the top mounts will need changing to suit the holes in the strut tops, or as Paul did Weld mk2 strut tops onto the mk1. obviously this will need doing bob on 100% accurate as to not affect the geometry.

There's no fitting guide needed really, take your Mk2 coilovers, remove the Mk2 top mounts, fit Mk1 top mounts (this part will depend on the coilovers you have, they are not all the same, some modification may be needed).

You might need custom length droplinks, again easy.

This won't work on the rear of a Mk1A, it only applies to B cars.

As i posted somewhere else, you can get away with keeping the rear Mk2 topmounts and just elongate the inner two strut top holes by 2mm and they will work without having to use the Mk1 top mount, so in reality you only need to change the front top mounts.

Hope that helps.

It was news to me when I read it the other day, hence this thread.

The good news is that sets of Mk2 coilovers are readily available, there is a good level of choice both new and second hand.

Is there any difference in strut length between mk1 and mk2?

I would be a bit annoyed if I shelled out for mk2 coilovers for my mk1 then found out I couldn't lower it as much as I had wanted because there is less travel or something like that.

Possibly useful info for this thread? But then I guess a lot is dependant on the brand of coilover.

PW has mk2 Tein Suspension on his up and coming mk1 project, he wouldn't say it was doable without making sure it all fits :thumleft:

Although, if you're gonna buy new you may as well get a set for a Mk1 I suppose ?

Or £949 if you go for the inverted type

Cheap compared with Tein though

I'm looking at Mk1 coilovers

Any chance of a cost price group buy Charged :?:

I've had a go in a MK3 with this suspension and it was stonking. Worth the money I'd say.

You get the pillowball top mounts as well.

They are extra though... At least they were last year when I got mine.
