Vibrating steering 50 - 70 mph...

Post by 10thanni »

Anyone got any ideas?

Massive vibration in steering wheel so had front tyres (not back) balanced and realised that the front right caliper was stuck on. Got it greased up and all ok but the steering wheel still vibrates massively at 50 - 70 ish.

Help! :-)

Will take to garage again tomorrow but advice would be useful.

Spigot rings.
If you haven't got them.

Has it suddenly come on?

I have the same problem! I feel the vibration at that speed. A bit less at other speed, but still feel it. Tires are balanced, brake discs were checked, not stucked. Could this be affected of worn suspension? For eg.: steering rack ends.
I have no spigot rings in front. Could be that a problem? I have two on rear wheels, should I try to put them in front to see if that makes a difference?

P.S. The strenght of vibration changes at the same speed.

Greddy, the same as me...the strength varies. It just started last week by the way Baker, for no apparent reason. I thought that maybe I had hit a pot hole and therefore needed balancing. Will keep you posted what I discover though I will be away from Wednesday til next week so might not be until then.

In the meantime, not great fun to be driving around in, hmm...

Thanks! I will also let you know if I find out anything.

Yes, it's really annoying to drive with vibrating wheel.

If the discs would be hooked, then you would feel vibration when braking, I think...

I used to have this problem.

I changed at the same time, brake calipers , discs , pads , drop links , wheels and tyres.

It was silky smooth all the way to the top then, no vibration anymore.

I'd say at a guess either wheels and / or tyres.

Loose suspension parts? Worn joints? Tyres balanced properly?

It is amazing how much effect a new set of ball joints can have.. I've had my rears done and i'm going to get the front done.

It just feels tighter..

but I'd take wheel off and check drop links all the rubber bushes etc make sure they are all good if not replace them check struts for leaks etc.. :thumleft:

I have some loose parts... For eg., waiting for a set of drop links and there is no one in front at the moment, lol  I couldn't unscrew it when changing shocks.

It will be lack of spigot/hubcentric rings if you are running aftermarket alloys.

I'm running sparco ns2 with a special lugs that should keep wheel centered, but maybe there is still needed spigot rings.

The weight should be taken by the hub via spigot rings if needed not on the nuts, I would invest in metal ones too, only about £15 for all 4...

My impression is that you simply cannot get the wheels centered on the hub 100.00% accurately with spigot rings, especially if they're plastic ones.

But also, it seems like there are hardly any people out there, who know how to balance wheels correctly. I'd strongly recommend to advice your tyre fitter to get it perfect instead of the "near enough" approach they usually apply. The MR2 is extremely susceptible to badly balanced wheels.

Also, when the car is in the air, try supporting the weight of the wheel with your hands while you tighten the wheel nuts.

These exact problems eventually made me switch to OEM Supra Mk3 alloys. No spigot rings needed and 100% vibration free motoring. \:D/

Cheap as chips aswell and not that bad looking either if you like it "old-skool" :D ;)
