Sanity check, 50 profile on a 16" wheel under stock suspension?

Post by Marf »

Just about to push the button on a set of R1Rs, 225/50 and 205/50.

These will definitely fit under black billies ya?

Although nellie996 has 50 profile on 16s and his rub we think.. But that is down to SEVERLY sagging springs..

I guess they rub the arch liners then?

Sagging springs don't affect the spring cup height.

I run a 235/50/16 and it doesnt rub, but my rear arches are rolled. Never had a problem running 205/50/16 upfront either.

You gotta tell us what the R1Rs are like, although i've got to wear out my pretty much new t1-rs first

Yep my arches are rolled and pulled, no issues with a 17x9 225/40 back there :)

It's annoying that Toyo don't make a 235/50 in a 16" R1R when they do a T1R :-k

But yeah, I will report back soon once they're fitted. I'm expecting them to be pretty damned good, and for less than £400 for four, they pretty keenly priced!

Well 235/45 16 would be fine too, but no tyres in that size either!

You want to see real balloon try a manly 265/45/16

I thought it looked cool anyway. I ran 225/50/15 on the front with that rear setup

PS - 205/50/16 should fit with maybe half to one cm to spare to the front spring perch underside

So your speedo reads out by over 6%? Anything over by 5% here and your car is no longer road worthy and can be ordered off the road.

I'm not a fan of tyres being massively oversized. Looks like poo and throws the speedo out.

 Who sells tyres in a 265/45/16

Also I always make sure to test the speedo against gps and its never realy that badly out imho.

Plus low profile tyres 'look' good but I hate the harsh ride they give and they are way less progressive when giving up grip than the baloons.

Kumho V700 (similar to R888) but it needs a minimum of 8.5" width rim to fit it which isn't so commonly found these days in a 16" rim - although I believe the older Supras had a 16x9" alloy that would work fine.

With regard to throwing out the speedo - I think people worry too much about this. Even with the 265/45/16 my speedo still over read by a few mph on the MR2 (although this may possibly vary depending on which speedo convertor you are using to change kmh to mph).

When I put 235/50/16 on the rear of my MX5 (and for that car this is a pretty large tyre - much more so than with the MR2) the speedo was almost spot on -still over read by about 1mph at higher motorway speeds. Gave me 'better gearing' too in that I wasn't cruising at quite such ridiculously high RPM at just the motorway speed limit

Another bonus I foundis that a higher profile tyre will in general be slightly wider than its equivalent width lower profile tyre from the same company (from looking at their spec sheets) and will give a more comfy ride too.

As for looks - I actually prefer fatter tyres myself although I know the low profile look is probably more popular in general :eye:

Yep, this is pretty much my reasoning too. My car's a daily, I want a chunkier tyre on their for a bit of comfort, plus I prefer the look of a fatter tyre. :thumleft:

I'd need a speedo that worked for this to be an issue TBF

And as the speedo is not required for MOT, its never been an issue for me just to have my sat nav in my window for my actual road speed.
