Whats the buzzing noise??

Post by Scott25 »

Hi guys, Ive noticed an intermittent 'buzzing' noise coming from the engine bay, even when the car is off. Had a listen up close and I think its coming from the charcoal canister, does this sound right?

Any thoughts, much appreciated.

Doesn't it channel fuel fumes back into the petrol tank and help you get better economy / help the environment.

Least thats what I thought it was for.

Really?? :-k So does it/can it make this buzzing noise or do you wreckon its something else?? It definately sounds like its coming from the canister though. Could it be faulty?? Should it be removed? Cheers in advance

Possibly it could be the gasses reacting to the wood embers or what ever they have in there..

Just guessing though.

lol...enviroment...and your driving an mr2 turbo???? man, you need to do some serious carbon footprint offsetting to compensate for each time you start it up, never mind when you give it the beans...I think it's primarily for meeting some emmisions law in JP....joking aside, taking as much care of the planet is obv in our own interests...but don't believe the hype...how much $hit is belched out into the atmos every time a jumbo takes off, or the shuttle, or a satelite is launched...Eddie Stobart is a one man tree killer...that cannister is a pi$$ take. :D :D :D

Well if you are that bothered.. If it is still buzzing when the engine is off i'd disconnect the battery. if it continues to buzz after that then it isn't electrical. If it instantly stops.. Then it is I would recommend looking into it further then..

Just a thought.

It's there to filter the fumes from the fuel tank vent.

I removed mine many moons ago, as it's:

1. A piece of junk
2. Sounded like a bee trapped in a coke can

I just vent my tank to atmosphere now, i've had no ill effects, apart from the odd whiff of fuel when i've got my head in the engine bay :thumleft:

Thanks for all the replys guys. I think im going to leave it for now and let it buzz away the odd time, as its apparent it does no harm. Seems a strange thing to be in an engine bay but ive learned something new. Cheers again

I have the same thing, always wondered what it was. What's the deal with removal, where do the pipes that connect to it go if i take it out?...

The charcoal canister is part of the EVAP system.

It filters vapour from the tank, the charcoal (much like with vodka!) filters the vapour. Then, under certain operating conditions, it vents the vapour back into the engine.

It reduces the CARS emissions. Not exhaust, but the cars general emissions.

The remainding vapour gets vented to atmosphere.

Should it make a buzzing sound then? And is it ok to get rid of it?...
