Sucking in snow when driving.

Post by kherseth »

Hi again folks.

Finally the snow arrived, and a unforeseen problem comes up. When i start the blower it sucks snow into the car, spitting it out at quite high speed and hitting me straight in the face. It is a really annoying issue as the car gets damp and windows gets foggy. Of course there is also the safety issue of getting snow in the eyes while driving.

Just started wondering if there should be a filter somewhere to keep snow/dust out of the car? If not i`ll have to start looking for alternative solutions.

Brings a new meaning to the term "snow blind"

Most modern cars have pollen filters and such in the heater pipes to eliminate dust, pollen water etc im not sure if the MR2 has these ive not yet come across any.

Put it on recirculate, that will stop it drawing in outside air (and snow)

IIRC there's a piece of foam across the input end of the blower Kim

They evidently weren't thinking very seriously about filters when they designed the AW11

Snow on the windy island in February eh :)

Thanks for the answers guys.

Jimi: Problem with recirculating is that you also recirculate the moist in the air(which also accumulates from breathing), thus the windows get foggy anyway.

Peter: Must be missing that piece of foam then, maybe put in a mosquito instead, should stop the worst snow at least.

Yep, been snowing quite a bit these last weeks, probably over 60cm now. Need to get myself a new snowboard soon, and find a way to put it in the MR2 :P

Thinking about it, I can't understand how your getting snow inside the car :?
The outside air has to pass through the heater matrix before it gets distributed around the car, the matrix is (or should be) hot and it's fairly obstructive (same as a radiator) so how is the snow managing to get past it ?

It`s from me not being able to brush off the snow on the air intake, not very accessible. And as it is only about 6km to work, the engine rarely gets really warm. I wonder how much snow and ice have accumulated at the heater matrix :S I have noticed that there must be water in there when it is warm, as i get condensation when the car is heating up.

Between us we ought to be able to bodge up an input filter somehow?

.. To filter it out before it gets as far as the heat exchanger.

Should think so Cecil.

I think i`ll find some foam at work to make the filter, just need to find some with the right texture to it so that air may pass.
