My aerial dosn't extend, ive stripped and cleaned and relubed it and it still wont work, so i think the motor in it has gone. Not particularly fussed as i use a cassette to mp3 player attachment normally.

Electric aerial faults are very common. Without the aerial up you'll struggle to get any kind of reception.

There are a few solutions for the aerial, you can either retrofit a universal one from Maplin or similar (there are wiring guides floating about if you search) or replace it with a flexible one or some people have experimented with types that fix to the rear screen.

I think they were all electric originally. It all depends if they have been wired correctly or not as well with aftermarket head units.

Your best option is to replace the aerial. You can either replace with another electric or put a manual one in. I have no idea if Toyota still stock OEM aerials or not, I got one for my MK1a but that was a roof mounted aerial and only £40.

If you remove the trim from the end of the boot you can clearly see if you have an elecric or manual aerial Winch

If its electric & you can pull the pole up with pliers then something is wrong at that end

Are you sure the signal lead is properly connected to the back of the radio head unit ?

On my Mk1b the power & switching leads for the electric aerial connect to the main loom at the base of the drivers side A-pillar

The signal lead is very much longer than on an ordinary aerial

If the original aerial has been replaced at some time then an extension lead would hve been used

In that case is there a problem with the connection with the extension ? (somewhere in the middle of the cabin)

So, a loose blue wire near the radio head unit & when you touch it with the radio switched on & aerial pole extended you get radio reception Beki :?:

Hi again thanks 4 the help peter, i had another look and i think the problem is the ariel cable from the antenna so im going to change that. It piks up a better reception when i wiggle it.
