I think it's one of those topics a bit like what petrol to use that causes much debate, Alex!

You need to seal the rings, that's key. Some advocate a full on approach, other's will say don't go over 3K rpm for the first 1000miles.

I've always done something inbetween. Vary the revs, higher revs under light loads and lifting off, that kind of thing.

Interestingly I will be in the same position as you once I get the new engine in my car. As it's Mark's engine, I will have to adhere to his wishes though.

Everything, is back from the machinist now, just waiting on a crank pulley as mine snapped coming off. Ive got a used one off neil jones the breaker as fensport couldnt tell me when their billet ally ones were for sale.. so as soon as that comes i can start building and timing it all back up!

Did you buy an oversized pulley from fensport then Alex or have you managed to come by a stock sized one?

I was after an N/A billet pulley Jedd apparently they are being balanced as we speak. They couldn't give me a date when they would be back from the balencer's which is why i had to buy one from a breaker. Bit disappointed really. I was looking at importing ones from usa/poland too but i dont fancy waiting months for one to arrive. Fed up of driving the death trap around.

Can you start the engine re-build without the pulley Alex ?

Crank, pistons & rods, flywheel, etc

Crank pulley can be one of the last things to go on if need be.

Yes. Ive also ordered the wrong big end bearing shells, so need to order the new ones at some point today. After reading Tom's guide on how to identify the right ones the new ones will be ordered today.

Ah that's a shame, maybe an upgrade for the future then eh. I'm looking for a lightweight one myself as I've got some minor damage to my pulley too. I guess I can wait though :D I'm looking forward to seeing yours all put back together again!

Would there be any real benefit?

I could get one as my engine isn't going in until the end of march.

I have a lightened flywheel too, but what gain would come from the crank pulley?

Well according to this;
www.nonstoptuning.com/NSTPULLEYS/pKitToyMR2.htm
They are claiming 7-10 hp increase if you get the set of lightweight pulleys, however I think they are different sizes from the stock parts. Not sure how that would effect performance through the rev range though..

Those NST pulleys are only for the charger aren't they?

Well im slightly gutted. The replacement still hasn't arrived. Ive been checking the mail at work everyday like a little kid on his birthday morning checking every day to no avail. According to fensport last week they batch should be in and ready for sale this week, so pretty gutted i spent £60 on a used standard one for it not to turn up yet, when a brand spankers lighter one was £100 and probably got here at the same time. Swings and roundabouts some would say, i reckon its just bad luck as always.

I think it would give good gains, i mean were not talking the same lines as breathing mods or anything light that so i wouldn't expect a massive hp change from an n/a (from an s/c maybe, if size is differant) but id expect the engine to rev slightly faster/easier as its effectively spinning less weight giving the engine less work to do.

Why not buy a lightened flywheel as well then Alex?
