MR2 dB noise level

Post by mario308 »

Hi, what is a typical value of noise (dB) for a standard stock non modified MK1 MR2 (1987)?
I am doing Brands in March, so just wondering what to expect?
Cheers,
Mario.

Far lower than brands's noise limit :thumleft:

You say not modified Mario but it can't possibly have the original exhaust system after 24 years

Are you sure it doesn't have a non standard exhaust :?:

A Janspeed for instance can be very noisy

Why ever not? I see Mk1s with the standard system on all the time.

Mine still has the same standard back box on it from the day I bought it in 1994 when I asked the Toyota dealer to fit a new exhaust as a deal clincher.

i.e. that same rear box has been on the car since 1994 and has never needed changing!

The front pipe was first changed in 1997 and is still going strong.

Not the original 24 year old one though :)

For example my Mk1b has had two new silencers and one front pipe fitted while owned by me and is gettiing ready for a third silencer

Perhaps you may have misunderstood the point I was making :?:

Somebody somewhere will have a mint mk1 MR2 that still has the original exhaust on it.

My rear exhaust is 18 years old and still OK. At what year does it become impossible for it to still be there?

Does someone take it away on a certain birthday? Do I need to fit bigger locks on my garage?

There are plenty of cars rolling around with standard exhausts on but I'd doubt you'd find many with the exhaust fitted at the factory still on it.

I guess anything's possible but exhausts tend to rust if they're not used and rust if they're used. Can't win really.

If you're keeping the car better to get a stainless system really.

As for noise, probably factory quiet probably (total guess) <90db if the baffles are still in it.

You've completely lost me.

The OP asked what the DB value was on a standard stock non modified exhaust and you replied with he couldn't possibly have the original fitted?

I think it's you who has misunderstood somewhere Peter.

Guys, Thx for all your replies, just to let you know, my MR2 has a standard replacement exhaust system - front & back box and it was fitted back in 2003 when the car had 128k on the clock. It's now got 147k and I've had this MR2 about 12 years :D

The exhaust is probably coming to the end of its life but doesn't sound any louder than when it was new so I think it will be less than the limit of Brand's 105dB.

Incidentally, my old Ferrari Mondial with a sports exhaust used to get in just under the limit back in the 90's but difficult for me to judge what the MR2 will read?

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Cheers,
Mario.

Seriously Mario, you will be miles and I mean miles under. Remember each decibel higher is twice as loud as the previous one (or something like that).

I'd be amazed if it went over 92db. A 105db limit is high anyway!

my documents say the sound emmisons of MR2 are

92dB standing still
77dB passing by (driving)

this is with TTE dual exhaust fitted. former german documents had both factory emmisions and new exhaust emmisons written down. my documents retained just the latter.

and as Lauren said, dB is an energetic unit, measured in logarthmic scale :) every 2-3dB double the sound energy so 90dB and 92dB makes huge difference.

My Mk1 has an OEM type silencer system (bought from eBay not Mr T)

It passes the MSA Blue Book sound level test for sprints & hillclimbs every time without question

That statement is irrelevant. What is the noise limit in the MSA book? It could be 150Db or 80Db.

Like an insurance company telling you they will call back "soon". Soon to me is within the hour, to them it could be 6 months.

JDM track noise limits are 125 db.

125db is ear splittingly loud.

MSA regs on it will be irrelevant, it's all about what the local limit is on a track. Some are more strict (have more issues from NIMBY's) than others.

It's funny, a friend of mine has just taken over a hangar at an ex military airbase. He's getting complaints about the amount of tyre noise when he's using the runways. Yet most of the residents would have lived there when it was a live airbase.

My statement was not irrelevant

It was incomplete

Since you ask, for my car it is 96 dB measured at a distance of 2 metres
