Gearbox removal

Hi guys and girls,
How easy is it to remove the gearbox?
I have been told by my trusted garage my dif is showing signs of wear, and as I like to keep the car tip top I would like to sort it out.
Is it possible and how many spanners rating is it to remove the lsd.
My 2 is only a weekend car and does a few track days, would I benefit much from an upgraded dif?
Although from prices I don’t think I will bother.

not easy...you need to drop the engine down on the offside by undoing some coolant pipes, some wiring and removing some of the exhaust, suspension linkages,starter motor, driveshafts obv need to be seperated from the gearbox but can stay attached to the hubs/suspension...I removed the subframe completely as it made for more visability...I was doing it in a field with wood and jacks...if you have any doubts about your toolkit or mechanical skills...take it to an affiliate...or trade it in at Fensport for a recon jobbie.

Do all rev3+ boxes have lsds?

Well I've had mine out twice now, not a fun job atall.

Workshops class it as a 4hr job, I did mine on my drive and it took 2 days

Worse thing is I have got to do it AGAIN before race season starts

suppose everything can wear out, particularly if it's not be maintained as it should be evryone whose owned it...oil etc.

...but man..if you've ever split one of these boxes and had a poke about...they're built like the vault door at Fort Knox...have you ever had the driveshafts replaced? is it the case that, earlier cars have one slightly shorter/longer drivers side shaft...I have a vague inkling in my head that I have recently read a thread with this in it, can't vouch for it's vallidity though.
I would be taking it for a second opinion matey, alternatively, you could pick up an lsd box for around the £300 mark from an affiliate who has looked it over or has knowledge of the vehicle it came from...best way to buy if your not car part savvy.
Tip...if you do decide to split the box and have a poke around, read the guide and don't lose the grommet.

i think i am in the same boat. my diff clangs when i slow to a stop but it only does it after i driver for a long time. not looking forward to the huge repair bill.

IIRC, LSD was standard Rev3 on.

Cant remember exactly what they said, something to do with extra movement between the wheels, something like that. I was last year on its annual service and mot. They don’t deal with gearbox’s and were not saying it needed to be done just a commented it will need looking into in the future, so cant see any reason for them to lie plus I have been using them for nearly 8 years.

On the other hand Its always good to hear the opinion from an mr2 specialist though if it does not sound right.

Me and mate did a clutch on his 2. On the floor on stands was a pig. Then we had his engine out when it went for forging. There horrible things to work on lol.
