Formula atlantic 4A-GE for sale, brand new.

Post by kherseth »

Not my sale obviously, would have made a trackday car with it instantly.

Must be serious fun/difficult to drive, probably raise a couple of eyebrows too :)

Never seen anyone put one of these in an MR2. The odd one has found it's way into an AE86 though:

This one was a build over on AEU86.org:

Hmmm $18 K for 250 HP

Its a helluva lot of buck for that amount of bang

Nice nevertheless :)

Presumably thats the ultimate from a 4A engine ?

Yes, that's pretty much the ultimate from a naturally aspirated 4AGE. A redline of around 10500rpm is pretty high.

Here's a link to the build of that car with the Formula Atlantic engine. The guy was building a TRD N2 replica:

Its a yummy looking little engine Lauren

Running a pair of twin choke Webers

Why do the cam covers rise up like that at the drive end ?

I guess the biggest problem, besides the price, is to service it, from what i found over on another forum the engine rebuild interval was about 200miles. It supposedly eats crankshaft bearings for breakfast, and at a cost of 5300$ at toysport, a crank failure is expensive enough.

The cam covers rise up because 'Formula Atlantic' was a single seater American race series and the cam cover mounted the engine rigidly to the chassis.

Used just for sprints & hillclimbs it could almost be a practical proposition for two or three years without a re-build I suppose Kim :?

But as the man said the first thing you need for a project like that is a very big pile of money

Of course, for short track racing the servicing is less of a problem. Pretty sure it is just about useless for road use anyways. As long as you stick to to the intervals i guess it might run for a long time too.

Not just a huge pile of money but the ability to swallow a lot of pride when a more powerful non 4a-ge'd version goes sailing past.

Having a 4age in that state of tune for that sort of money does nothing for me. A 2gr'd or lightly tuned 3s-gte version will kill that in every dept for half the cost.

Nice engine as far as engines go though :thumleft:

I think the joy of revving above 10krpm would compensate for the lost pride IMO :)

Absolutely and the razor throttle response would make it a joy to steer on the throttle. :+:

You can do the same thing with a Hyabusa engine, that doesn't necessarily make it the right choice.

There's not a single one of you that would pay $18k for that engine even if you had it to blow, it's overpriced, overtuned and underpowered.

Time to take off the 4a-ge tinted specs, it would be nice to own, but only if it was sensible money.

But paul, if you were hillclimbing and sprinting. The formula atlantic engine would keep you in a std roadgoing class 1.4L-1.8L (ish club dependent). any conversions would put you in sports libre against ex wrc rally cars.

But from a practical point of view. completely agree a swap would be better :thumleft:

Hmmn, I think that would be quite something to drive and pretty unique. Fancy it for that alone.
