HELP fixing a leak!

Post by jack-p »

well i have wet carpets in my car #-o
my car is a t-bar and there it was dripping a little in heavy rain but im not sure if this would be enough to get the carpets so wet.
first things first i fixed the leak using the scilicone/clingfilm trick, worked :thumleft:
next, i decided to clear out the drain holes underneath the windscreen cowl because i fixed the wet carpet issue with my girlfriends megane this way.
i currently have a dehumidifier sat in the car to try and dry it out, is there any other source of leaks though?

I thought i'd document it and make a how to just incase it was the windscreen cowl causing the issues. would be nice (if this is a fix of course) for this to be saved to help others :thumleft:

okay first things first, you will be removing this windscreen cowl.
Image
You will need to start by removing the the wipers as the cowl wont come off with them in place. pull off the caps and unbolt the bolts on them (try to remember what position the wipers were in before removal because this will help put them back in the correct place later).
Image
Image
Image
next locate all the screws on the cowl and unscrew them, make sure you dont miss any because you dont want to snap anything!
theres one underneath these caps too.
Image
Image

now lift the rubber seal away and pull off the plastic cowl.
Image
Image

its in these two drainage holes underneath where you'll need to flush out.
get a hose and tuck it down each hole as tight as you can get it.
Image
Image
and the other side
Image
when the hose is in place turn the water on and it should flush out the drain holes.
take a look under your arch with the hose running and you should see the water running down :thumleft:
Image

now put it all back together using a combination of common sense and the reverse of these instructions and you're all sorted.

right well flushing out the drainage for the windscreen hasnt solved the issue so i cant confirm that this would've caused damp interior, no real harm done though as it was a quick and easy job :thumleft:

Bad news is, i still have a leak!! someone help with some advice please.

my drivers side footwell is soaked and i really can't see where the water is coming in! there doesnt seem to be any dripping at all from the top of the drivers side window.
something i did notice while investigating was there is evidence of water on the inside the pillar plastic. how does the drainage system work around this area? and does anybody know how the waters getting in there?

I also noticed the other day under heavy rain that water was dripping through the vent on the rear quarter window plastic (on the inside of the car), its not alot and i dont think its causing my wet footwell because the carpet seems dry behind my drivers seat. any ideas whats causing this??

and my final drippage issue, on the passenger side, between the doorcard and the side of the dashboard water is dripping down under heavy rain. again its not alot so the carpets not soaked again just yet but it needs addressing none the less!

ANY help muchly appreciated

Mine was leaking badly & did the clingfilm thing & still bad. Turned out that the rear quater windows were leaking, one really badly. The seals get hard over time & it was pouring in. Have a mate who works for autoglass & he removed them & rebonded with modern stuff. Now no probs.

If you remove the trim on the inside, you'll see they're bolted in place. Maybe not too hard to remove them yourself (glass is cheap secondhand if you break) then clean them up and buy some sealer yourself & do it. I can ask him what would be best to use for the man in the street...

Hope that helps ..

Water Leaks

Post by cosmos »

Rear Louve behind rear quarter glass is where the roof water drain tube exits externally. Remove the rear drivers cubby box and watch when it rains the rear carpet may remain dry because there are longitudinal (for strength) channels depressed in the floorpan they act as drains and take the water straight down to the footwells!!
Rear quarter glass Toyota sell "sealing kits" at £40ish a side, the rubber gasket around the glass was never meant to totally seal (body discrepancies) hence the bonding kit, consult a windscreen company and get quotes its cheaper and less trouble. The glass in question might be awkward to remove 3x 8mm nuts on inside of car, remove then push out.........can be tight, might explode!!cover up the rear quarter of car below the glass line to protect the paintwork assuming door open.

Good Luck.

thanks guys, in that case a change of glass could be a good move (i have rose tinted glass on that window anyway whereas the rest of the car is green ](*,) ) i never knew that about the toyota seals either, i fitted my rear quarter windows with window sealant.

Remove the door cards ,and run a hose on the outside ,see if any water is running down the door ,onto the sill and into the footwell
this was happening to one of my cars once ,

And as above ,check the drain tubes are in the drain box,by the rear vents

I have the same thing but on the passenger side. When it rains, i can actually see the water coming in like a small river from underneath the plastic flare holder (on imports that is). i fitted new seals from Toyota which solved the problem of water getting in from the roof of the car - it seems to run down inside the seal and trickle into the car! Not much help i know, but at least its something to look at. I will have a look in the next few days and post any findings - assuming there are any!

Very old topic, but I have the same problem. The drains are completely clogged because.... the previous owner filled the whole chassis with urethane foam to increase the stiffness (the car was a 90% track car usage).

The nightmare for me (I use it for track only 40% of the time).

Not sure how to remove / burn / drill all that foam away to let the car drain.

As it is, HUGE amounts of water collect at the cowl area, till it eventually makes its way through the air ventilation - VERY uncool!
