stupid owner, oil everywhere

Post by benmumford1 »

my oil was a bit low, topped it up a bit too much (well quite a bit) and now i think i have fuc*ed it. Was driving along (quite hard) and could smell oil, got home about 5 miles later and there was oil everywhere. Dump valve was spaying it everywhere. i hoped oil had just blown throuh breather but 30 miles later and still the same and oil level down to half. it also missed a bit but now runs fine with good boost but some smoke. please help, and yes i am stupid.

For starters ensure the oil is now at the right level. Next steam clean the engine to remove all the oil that has sprayed out. I would then take all of the pipe work off around the dump valve etc. and clean it all out including the valve. You may have been lucky and you might be ok, but over filling will mean that you will get a build up of pressure which as you have seen not only causes oil to blow out over the engine but may breached the seals in various places such as the sump gasket. If you are getting smoke this could be what has happened and since you were driving the car hard, the pressure will have built up by a fair amount. If you're lucky it might be excess oil burning away from places where it shouldn't be. You are probably lucky in the fact that you have sorted the situation quickly, so you may get away with your error, just don't do it again!

cheers for the info, do you think it would be worth removing intercooler to clean, or is it a big job.

It can be done, though it is a bit of an PITA. TBH I would remove and clean everything, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so this is likely OTT. You will probably find that the oil dissappears over time anyway.

I believe it may be possible to break the piston rings by putting too much oil in (but stand to be corrected).

Well, the extra pressure from trying to pump all the excess of oil around could well have blown quite a few seals... you'll likely have tons of oil in your inlet manifold, going into your turbo, being burned off etc..

I would seriously reccomend dropping the oil out and putting the correct amount in... don't wait for it to 'burn off'.
