Was catalytic convertor an original item on MR2 pre 1992 ?
new MOT regs mean they have to be fitted if original ?
Could mean lots of hassle for those who De Cat ?

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Catalytic Converter Original equipment question.
Depends whether it's an import or not, n/a or turbo.
From memory, early UK NAs didn't have cats as standard, but JDM ones did. All 3SFE cars had cats too, I think.

Silly. Surely if it passes the emissions tests, it passes... regardless to wether or not a CAT is on?!

600 quid I got quoted for a cat once from Toyota... That was for an FE. I`m not putting a cat back on my car. 1990 import turbo hopefully = M.O.T tester has no clue whether it had one on as standard or not.

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Catalytic Converter Original equipment question.
Revision 1: December '89 - August '91
Revision 2: August '91 - November '93
Revision 3: November '93 - June '96
Revision 4: June '96 - December '97
Revision 5: December '97 - May '99
Engine and Gearbox
The mk2 MR2 was available with a choice of four engines:
3SFE: UK Only - 118BHP -
3SGE: UK, Japan - 158-200BHP -
3SGTE: Japan, USA - 200-241BHP -
5SFE: USA Only - 135BHP -
The lower powered 3SFE engine was only available in revision 1 and some very early revision 2 cars in the UK.
Exhaust systems vary between engine versions as well. Revision 1 and 2 engines have the same manifolds, while the revision 3 is different but shares the 4-2-1 layout. revision 4 and 5 cars have a 4-1 exhaust manifold design. All japanese model cars have a catalytic converter, as have revision 2+ UK cars.
So.......a Rev 1 3SFE 1991 did not have a Cat as standard ??
I believe?

NNNNNNnnnnnoooooooo
some early rev 2 had £sfe engines and may have been subject to cat rgulations post 1992?
This seems like its going to burn holes in many MR2 pockets as newer cars have de cats.

There's no point in taking the cat off an N/A anyway, unless it's failed, and over 50% of turbos qualify for not having one due to not being in the emissions book.

According to that timeline the Rev1 made for 8 months making it a very short lived car.
December 89 Rev1's FTW, no cat required
