Hi all.
I'm making some plans for the turbo once it's back on the road.
After an initial shakedown/getting it through MOT etc. with the replacement 3s-GTE engine I'd like to get it to around 300BHP at the fly using mild modifications.
I've tried looking for a 'tuning guide' showing what sort of power figures to expect and how to achieve them but haven't been able to find one?
The engine I'm putting in allegedly comes with a turbo technics stage one hybrid CT26, (I need to double check this is true when I go to pick it up)
So using that along with:
uprated actuator, using stock internal wastegate
Electronic boost controller
Piggyback ECU, probably Emanage Ultimate,
Decat exhaust,
Induction kit with shielding.
Should a 300bhp power figure be achievable with these basic mods?
Anyone know if larger injectors or uprated fuel pressure regulator would be required at this sort of power level??
As I said before I'm new to MR2's so need to find out what kind of figures they're capable of and what I need to budget for
Thanks
Dan

Get an uprated intercooler involved and you should see 300
You wont need internals until about 350 from memory?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
Is this a Rev1/2 engine or a Rev3+?
On a Rev3 and above engine just your basic stage one mods should see you at or near 300hp.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
It's a Rev 2 engine. Were there many differences between 2 and 3?
Is the stock intercooler generally considered as being fairly weak?
I take it it gets its air from one of the side scoops??
I'll ad a decent intercooler to the list then, should be easy to get to and change while the engine is out!
Any other tips?
Cheers

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
rev 2 if it's still producing good factory power, was only 225 atfw when brand new.
straight through 3" exhaust + decat
airfilter (not sure this is absolutely necessary, may just give you more noise)
Boost raised to 1.2bar with AVCR
Mines ecu (not remappable...mapped in Japan on 102ron fuel for 1.2bar, rev limit raised to about 8k!!!!, fuel cut removed)
ARC intercooler
rev 3 ct turbo/actuator
all new ignition components/sensors
...just manages to kick the back doors of 300 at the flywheel...on a good day, and it seems to be temperamental as fk.
If you don't have any fuelling mods, it would be cheaper and far more efficient to buy a rev3 turbo engine, blower and management.
My mate had a rev3 with a pipe, filter and Powerfc on it...had Lyndon tune it to 294bhp and it was bulletproof...no fiddling with $hit, just get in and have it...thats what I would do. I bought my car with all that old style tuning stuff on it...and it all does my head in at times.
...also, mate you will deffo need better brakes and handling if your gonna hike the power up...or you will be in a wall.
If you want to do this on a budget, be prepared to go and buy salvage items and have your wits about you...if you plan on staying in the scene and don't mind spending a bit more, then give Peter at Sbits a ring...let a specialist with years of knowledge do all the hard work for you...or Luke at Pacificworks...both top boys.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
Thanks,
Yeah the rev 3 seems to have had quite a lot of engine tweaks.
But I've got a free rev 2 engine, which apparently was rebuilt 12,000miles ago with the car, so I can't really justify buying a rev 3 engine when I can just put this one in.
I'm hoping to get it up and running in the summer with not a lot of extra investment. Then spending money on an AVCR intercooler and Piggyback is ok as these are all items which can be reused for the next engine if it goes badly wrong
So tune up to about 300atf, then run it until it dies, then thinking of a supercharged V6 swap if the rest of the car proves itself to be sound.
As for brakes and suspension, I'm putting koni sport dampers on it, Tein pillowball topmounts haven't decided on springs yet. Will have a good drive around in it before I decide on what anti roll bars it needs. and for now just going to refurbish the stock turbo calipers and get some decent discs and pads to keep costs down, may upgrade further later on when I've decided how far I'm going to take it!
Looking forward to towing the car home and getting started now!
Cheers

With you.., got a spare engine ready to go in when this gives up the ghost...thats my approach all over mate...take a gander on here at as many threads on why mr2 engines have blown...det is the biggest unseen gremlin...and doesn't always give you a second chance...don't wind up the boost without cooling and fueling, experts say that 1 bar max on a rev1/2 and 1.2bar max with rev3+...check out T.F.S on here...20 psi on standard pistons and HG.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
Im making 300hp with better intercooler and the TT s148 turbo @ 0.9bar so yes with those mods its achievable..
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
The engine that is currently in the car snapped it's cambelt and that's the reason the old owner took it off the road two years ago, it's quite possible that the engine is perfectly alright and just needs a new cambelt as the 3s-GTE is supposed to be non-interferance. However the engine has done 120,000 miles and the spare engine has been better looked after, apparently rebuilt 12,000 miles ago and is in generally better condition, so that's why I'm going to put this one in, rather than try and get the other one running. I'll probably sell the other engine off in bits!
Cheers for that, very encouraging, I'll let you know how I get on!

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
I'd hang on to it matey...they won't be dirt cheap for ever.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Modifications needed to reach around 300BHP
yeah, as stated, bolt on bits and a boost increase should see you there or there abouts 300bhp with healthy engine
Uprated intercooler or charge cooler
Decat
Free flowing aftermarket exhaust
Performance air filter
EBC or MBC at 1.1 bar

Id also uprate the headgasket to a rev 3 metal one. Stronger.

Cheers everyone,
Good to get such a good response on a forum!
I'll keep you all posted when I get some decent photo's and finally get the car to my flat!
