[Mk3] [Turbo] rev 3 VSV

Post by toyokid »

Do rev 3s' have a VSV valve to control boost in 1st and 2nd gears
like a rev 2?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. It is blue, located under intake manifold and viewable from under the car.

I believe it works differently to rev1/2, but not sure of specifics.

rev 3 VSV

Post by toyokid »

Having done a little research
it would appear that the rev 3 does indeed have a vsv to restrict boost in 1st and 2nd gears.

Now....
I have a 48mm hybrid
and an Apexi power fc
together with a Blitz twin solenoid boost controller
which is putting out around 300 bhp and similar torque.

My car is a daily driver
where sustained high speed
and smooth progress are required.
Our other cars are Audi and BMW which both have traction control
and it would seem that vsv would act like traction control in lower gears?

Would my Blitz twin solenoid work with vsv?
If so, should one be plumbed before the other?
All useful ideas appreciated
conjecture from gunners would not be.

rev3+ VSV is completely different from rev1/2. It's not an on/off like the early models it's a full on solenoid controlled by the ECU which means if you want to fit either an MBC or EBC to a rev3+, you must disable the VSV. Just pull the electrical plug on the inlet runner of no4 and job done :thumleft:

Hello Alan

So the standard VSV would not work together with an aftermarket twin solenoid boost controller to limit boost in the lower 2 gears??

you need to understand how the VSV works. It doesn't so much limit boost as raise boost.

The base boost pressure is about 10psi and that's what the engine runs when it's cold or in 1st or 2nd gear or in safe mode or many other reasons known to the ECU. When everything is ok with the engine the ECU uses the VSV to raise the boost up. Since the rev3+ VSV is running a stepper motor it can vary the boost from 10psi to way over 20 should it be told to.

If you fit another controller in line then that new controller sets the base level and the ECU will try and control the VSV to match the stock parameters. Your boost control is then all over the place so in short

disable the VSV if fitting aftermarket boost control to a rev3+. Use your right foot to keep boost down

(rev1/2 is a simple on off giving an additional 3psi of boost so can be used in conjunction with aftermarket controllers though most folks disable it to keep things simple)
