difference in 1a and 1b sill structure?

Post by jcbadger »

Hi

I am restoring a 1a and have noticed that the sill structure is different from reference pictures of other people's (1b) restorations. The 1b pictures show an inner sill strengthener. I'm in the process of doing my arches and sill end and looking into my sill I have noticed that there is no inner strengthener. The car has never been welded before so I know for sure that no one has chopped it out! This seems to be a major difference between the two chassis. is there a reason why an inner strengthener was added to the 1b - was the sill not 'up to the job' on the 1a? seems odd.

I know the T-bar cars have additional strengthening in the sills, to regain some of the stiffness lost from the roof structure, but I don't know if it was also used on sunroof or tintop shells

that makes sense - maybe the cars pics I have seen are of tbar cars. Mine is a tintop with sunroof.

Mine is a T-Bar and has the strengtheners: see pic of restored inner sill prior to outer sill going on:

Must admit I assumed it was unique to the T-Bar due to the loss of rigidity caused by chopping the roof out as it's a sizeable structure but I'd be interested to know for certain.
