How much to spray a bumper? ish..

Post by mattgt »

Any ideas on how much a body shop would charge to respray a standard front bumper? Going from one colour to another.

Input please :D

OK thats a good starting point. If i do some/most of the prep work would that bring the cost down much? And if so is there much involved?

To be honest, I get a local guy to do work on mine. You generally find that the smaller companies or private sprayers can match the quality you would get from a bodyshop who'd charge £250. Don't get me wrong, there are people out there that aren't good sprayers, but if you find a guy with a good reputation, seen a bit of his work, I can't see why someone would charge more than £100 to do a front bumper.

If you were to remove it yourself, strip it down, sand it down, repair any cracks and then take it to a bodyshop to have the rest done it wouldnt be much. Fit it back on yourself and at least then you know its been done properly.

For example, some little sh!t keyed down the drivers side of mine - Rear quarter, door and front wing. Car is 3e5 Red, cost me £100 at a local guys place to get it all done. And hes just a car nut who had concours Minis and Jags. And you wouldnt know by looking at it the panels that he did.

Just my 2p

Thanks for the input ^

Rang round a couple of places today the bigger, more well known guys wanted about £250, some plus VAT. I did find two places that would do it for £140 or £160.

Does the bumper need to be removed or can it be done while fitted?

Basically the last owner thought it would be a good idea to cut out the center plastic vent part and mesh it, and did a bad job... Im after the stock look but cant find a decent rev3 front in 202 black so planned on getting any old colour haveing it sprayed.

Is there a difference between spraying a black bumper black to say a red bumper black?

Bumper needs to come really or they can't get into the corners nicely.

I wouldn't pay any more than £150 max to have a front bumper just resprayed. You could prep it but they will probably say if you don't do it right they'll gave to re do it anyway.

I have a mate who owns a company called RT-Performance and are based in north london. They are very good at body work jobs and are not bad with their prices, give me a pm if you would like the guys number

I paid £180, but is chipping like bu88ery for the second time, so time to find a better bodyshop [-(

I doubt you'd get it much cheaper than that at a bodyshop, theres a couple of hours work involved.

Have a look on this thread.

Try Sharpe Concepts as I was quoted a lot less than the figures mentioned to have a bumper resprayed. I still haven't got round to it though!

I've got a spare bumper sitting doing nothing and I'm based in Wivenhoe. Doesn't have the lip but it's in A1 condition having been resprayed before I bought it. If you are interested make me an offer as I don't think I'll get round to using it.

Why save money by doing the prep yourself, thats the hard part that makes the most difference to the finish. Get the wrong scilicates in there and it will bubble in no time (even mixing filler should be done cleanly not on a peice of old card that has print on it as the print will have scilicates in).

Small body shops are better than 'insurance approved' ones as being insurance approved is not a sign of quality but more to do with playing the insurance companies game. Let the guy doing the painting do the prep it will be worth it in the long run.
