Track Car questions

1) Uprated engine mounts... does anyone do these? Speed events tend to take their toll on them and mine are pretty tired.

2) Are D2 Racing or BC Racing coilovers any good? Or am I better sticking with my original plan of modifying the original struts and using Koni inserts (well proven).

3) Quick rack... what is the cheapest way to do this? My original plan was to buy a refurbished rack and the Quaife kit and but the alternative is to use my rack and buy the bits to refurb from toyota.

4) Roll cage... does anyone do one that fits with the T-Bar roof?

Hey up lad we'll get round to it.

1) Yes but they'll make your car vibrate more!
2) BCs are used by the MR2 Championship and seem to have a good report
3) Do the quaife, its a bloody faff otherwise
4) Try Rogue Motorsport, but I think you'll find it'll make the panels very difficult to get off. I had to get one custom made for my t-bar.

1) Stock engine mounts should suffice. There have been people who have made their own poly bush engine mounts. But, if you make them a lot stiffer, you'll get more vibration through the shell. Have never had an issue with the stock ones in all honesty.

2) Cheap coilovers are not worth the bother. Depends upon what you are using the car for really. You haven't really specified what you are actually doing with it.

3) Well you can buy the Quaiffe kit and fit it. Do you really need a quicker rack though? Have never found the stock one to be an issue in racing or in trackwork.

4) Can't see why the rollcage would be different for a t-bar over a sunroof model, given that the sunroof has less headroom. Safety Devices used to do them, but the obvious thing to do would be to ask anyone who is racing or sprinting a MK1 where a cage is a mandatory requirement. When I raced in the inaugral MR2 Challenge back in 2004, the car I raced was a t-bar.

I was more asking where I could get engine mounts from if they are available rather than the pros and cons

Is the damping on the BCs as good as that of the Koni's though? Has anyone spoken to them about dyno results?

I will will be fitting the quaife rack and pinion, however I was wondering whether it would be cheaper to fit it to a refurbished rack or buy new track rods / bush / bearing from Toyota and fit the lot to my rack.

Not too bothered about how easy it is to get the panels on and off as long as they can be taken on and off if you get what I mean. Also forgot to mention that I need it to be MSA spec or FIA tested/approved.

I don't have to have one, but i wouldn't be happy watching my sister driving flat out without one. Cage / harness / bucket seat is a must in my eyes.

hmmmmm solid engine mounts....i want some of these. I love watching girls squirm and try to control themselves with the vibrations at higher rpm. Did a track day at oulton park last yeah in the integra dc2 with solid everything, Lasted 1 corner before the ex mrs started going cross-eyed..

Well, it's obviously your choice, but a bucket seat and harness would be plenty really, MK1's are very strong if they roll and having 5 bulkheads means they are very good in a crash. Only weak point is a side impact in the middle of the driver's door.

Plus speed type events don't carry the risk that say racing does.

I've got some that came from twosrus in the US. Fitting them didn't seem to add any noticable harshness or vibration but then the car has no interior and no sound deadening anywhere so I probably wouldn't notice

If you want it FIA the only choice is a safety devices cage, so you defo need to speak to Rogue. Make sure you go to a proper supplier! I've heard of home made cages being sold as FIA which aren't.

Pricey though and all they do is add a lot of weight to the car

Please be careful (I don't know Cheshire at all so it's no reflection on them) but I do know some of the cages in the MK1 series have problems. They are not what they seem to be!

Stick finding suppliers of safety devices cages IMHO.

The cages Cheshire Racing were using certainly looked the biz Toni

What they did say is that they TIG welded the mounting brackets into the front footwells

I didn't like the idea of that

Let's just say I am party to some information where a MK1 crashed with a so called FIA cage in recently which was privately supplied and it broke. The only way to be sure is to get a safety devices marked cage from an approved supplier, IMHO.

I was sold a roll cage that was NOT FIA/msa approved, and it was one from a previous supplier from the MR2 series. I crashed badly, and I dred to think what could have happened.

If it doesn't carry a homologation sticker, stay clear.

And Lauren, speed events are far more dangerous than racing, racing has run off and lovely padded armco. Hillclimbs and sprints have almost zero runoff in cases and walls trees everywhere.
