Also 6 speed? Let me get my head round this, you gutted a factory 5sp mk1 box, & dropped in a celica's 6sp internals? & it fits without modification? Theres space for the 6sp cog? what about the ratios compared to the mr2s factory? Then dropped in a mk3 mr2 lsd, again without mods? What about gear linkages/gates?

Basically the Celica 6 speed and the Mk1 box are both C series transmissions, so i just used the Mk1 bellhousing section, gutted all of the Mk1 internals, put the Celica bearing races from the Celica bellhousing into the Mk1 bellhousing (no mods), and then dropped the complete Celica internals into the Mk1 bellhousing.

The centre case is Celica, as is the end casing where 5th and 6th live.

The Mk3 Mr2 gearbox is also a C series (don't you just love Toyotas intercompatability, new word i just invented) so the LSD from a Mk3 fits into the Mk1/6speed casings, again no mods, just use the Celica crown wheel on that diff to keep it all correct. Finally the Mk3 6th gear pair fitted instead of the Celica 6th set.

What you should end up with is Mk1 gearbox utopia, all of the best bits from every C series transmission all in one unit.

The only thing that needs modifying will be the gear cable bracket, i will need to make one of those up in situ when the box gets fitted, but my original Mk1 cables will work on the 6 speed and using the Celica box means the linkages are on the correct side.

Driveshafts can either be Mk2 NA shafts (so one long and one short) which will plug and play into box and hubs (again no mods), or as i plan to do use a Celica supported shaft on the long side, with a bearing carrier bracket on the 4a-ge to give an equal length shaft setup.

I will be making jigs for both the axle bracket and gear cable bracket should anyone wish to copy it.

Wow, what a wonderful conversion Paul !

Seems to me that the Mk1 transmission was originally designed as 4 speed, with 5th gear added later in the little casing on the end

So if that's the case then with the Celica they went a step further ...

Really is great that there are so many interchangable parts

It's why i love Toyota so much Peter, you just don't get the huge range of parts compatability on other makes, it's fantastic being able to use modern parts on an 80's car.

back to the 4 branch manifold paul, what make is yours? would a Toyota 20 valve 4age one (I know the 2 outer lugs need modding to fit) be a good upgrade on the std. cast item?

What outer CV will you use on the celica two piece shaft? Do GT4 fronts fit? It would be nice to know so we could knock up some spare shafts for the rally car.

Also, post some pictures of your cable bracket when it's done, I'm very interested to see how you sort it. It was our biggest headache when we pioneered the C64 swap on our rally car.

Has anyone seen the new quaife C64!?!

Full dog engagement sequential complete with shifter, sensor for flat shifts and gear display. I want one

BUT.......£6k :pale:

There are a few S2 exige/elise' running this setup already, it's been tested by some endurance racers, and is so good it may even make it's way into the lotus options catalogue (if it hasn't already).

Possibly a little extreme for a weekend toy though!

aaaah so the boxes are effectivly 3 part jobs, just like they used to be made! & as you say wonderful intercompatiblity - but you have to say if a design works, why change it or the tooling. Very cool.
I assume the Celica is the mk7 T230 version as thats the only version I can think of that has a 6 speed manual?

Running on the same basis, in theroy could you use the GT4 box & transfer case to shunt power forwards, then pick up GT4 front legs/hubs for a awd setup - or am i being really thick with the orientation of the output shaft from the transfer casing?

Yes it's the Gen7 Celica gearbox which is a C series trans. The Gt4 has an E series trans so the parts from that won't swap onto the C, so you couldn't use its transfer box, even if it did fit it would be poking out the rear of the car instead of going forwards.

The S series gearbox found in the NA Celica (pre Gen7) and Mr2 Mk2 has some parts compatability to the C series, you can fit the same LSD to both and retain the same shafts.

I don't know the make of mine Kevin, i think it may have been custom made. Yes i think any good tubular manifold has got to be an upgrade over the stock manifold.

I will just use the Celica NA outer CV, that fits a Mk1 hub. GT4 front outer CV's also fit a Mk1 hub but i don't know if they will match your shafts.

think you have to cut off the two outermost lugs and make some new ones to line up with the 16v manifold bolt holes, not a major job but needs some welding
manifolds can be picked up quite cheaply

More 4a-ge'ing today, detailed my cam covers, going for a general azure/anodised blue, black and silver/polished bits on this engine.

Image

Got the Lexus V8 injectors installed and fuel rail fitted.

Image

The cam covers have had extra breathers fitted, these will run to my catch can, there isn't enough importance placed on adequate crankcase breathing.

Image

Lots of little bits done on the belt side, as always everything has a brand new bolt fitted.

Image

Image

Still a ton of stuff to do before it can come off the engine stand but it's getting there.

clearly your imagination is at the crank where I dream rear wheels!
i bought the 20V manifold BTW £80 inc delivery on its way from Miami FLA. as we speak, even if I get stung for import and VAT duty its a bargain (unless its just a piece of ebay crap ](*,) )

Mine is actually a 20v item too, so i've got the outer holes to modify as well, no biggy.
