3SGTE gearbox oil leak

Hi there

I need some help here please.

My car's engine is a 3SGTE. I found that there was an oil leak from the rear of the car. Upon closer inspection i noticed that the engine oil was fine.
Then i looked closely and found that there is small drops of oil comming out of gear box. Where the drive shaft enters the gear box.

The oil is ONLY leaking from one side - drivers side.

Im not sure how to tackle this has anyone got any clues as to what it could be and where do i need to start from...??

Driveshaft oil seal. Mine went. It's about £17 delivered from TCB parts. Easy enough change. Just make sure you don't damage the new one refitting the shaft. Don't leave it as it'll drain oil & run empty.

in the turbo they're different for drivers / passengers side. Don't buy 2 of the same type (learned from experience )
but do both at the same time.

Easy fix, but do be careful when reinstalling the drive shafts- it's easy to catch the lip of the seal

Hey Paul, one more tip for you.

If you ate going to use this opportunity to drain or replace the box oil make sure you can undo the oil fill bolt first, they have a habit of seizing and some people have been stuck having drained the oil to find out they can't get the new stuff in

It would be a major mission if i cant open the bolt to refill the gear box fluid. Would p155 me off and ruin my weekend too ...lol

I just recently done mine and need to do it again due to the drivers side driveshaft its so long and awkard to fit and i must have slightly hit the seal as i have a minor oil leak but its not to hard of a job just take your time as i wish i had done

And, how much gear box oil did you use or was it just a top up...?

Finally, what oil would you use or recommend ...?

Most people recommend Redline MT90. It comes in quart bottles (quarter gallon) You'll need 3 and a bit bottles! So 4 to buy. I just bought a decent equivalent from Halfords & used an old empty 1 liter "top up" bottle that I filled it with (can get it fully inverted & put flexible end into the side filler hole)

There is also a filler point on top of the box as well, but you'll need a hose pipe & funnel (or similar) to get down to it. Side hole will need to be open as well as that's the level you fill it to (fill until fluid starts to come out)

Is this really an easy fix? When I had my 2 up in the air to look at the alternator I saw the gearbox seal leaking but it looked like I would have to remove a heck of a lot of stuff to get the intermediate shaft off to change it.

Is there a guide anywhere?

I got my seals from toyota here are the part numbers and cost

T90311-40004 £9.68
T90311-50027 £13.83 than add vat

Oil i just got halfords 75-90 i think it was as i got a trade card and i bought 3 litres

its not to hard of a job and i have the hole online mr2 repair manual so im sure there is a how to guide on there i can email you them if people want it
