I need to replace my front discs and pads, but not sure whether to get:
Standard disc
Drilled disc
Grooved disc
Drilled & grooved disc
again the same question on standard pads etc.
I currently have standard discs and pads on my 93 turbo and have had drilled and grooved dics on a 90 NA a few years ago but didn't notice any improved performance.
My car is running as stock so am thinking of getting standard brakes, but then which ones are best?

What are you going to use the car for? Road? Track?
Stock is ok for road, but like chocolate on track...

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
I've read that drilled discs can be prone to cracking between the holes and that grooves cause accelerated wear. I don't think that discs can improve braking significantly as they're all just big chunks of metal, if you want better braking then aftermarket pads are your best bet, ebc or carbotech etc
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
Just get some carbotechs and make sure your calipers are all free and not seized, your car will stop VERY well!

Just will be using it just for the road.

Thanks. Would you recommend red/green stuff pads or steer clear?

The difference between aftermarket drilled discs and for example porsche std drilled discs is that the holes are cast into the discs unlike cheap aftermarket ones. I remember meeting a guy once withj an MR2 who'd drilled his own holes, there was barely any disc left, an accident waiting to happen!

Keep clear of anything EBC

Whats wrong with EBC then?
I heard OEM discs and pads would be best? At least for road use...
What are carbotechs and how do they compare to OEM?

The disks warp in no time just with normal use and the pads over heat so much they burn up the disks and damage wheel bearings with the heat.
Carbotechs will work great

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
I've used ebc discs and pads for years on the race track on slicks, never had a disc warp but I have had drilled generic discs crack. They do wear quickly on the race track braking from 140 mph so I now run a 356mm 8 pot set up on the front with ebc pads all round with air ducted on to the discs
When I finish at the end of a race I never use the hand brake and I roll the car forward at intervals as I think this may help against disc warping

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
So could the odd knocking sound Im hearing be the wheel bearing?
Which discs are you referring to when you said they warp in no time at all?

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
i have drilled/grooved EBC and up till now they have been fine
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
I have also worn out drilled/groovey discs in no time at all, the disc surface cracks and eventually fails...your lead to believe that they're a real pucka upgrade but they deffo don't pass the Dave test, pads are $hittered in 5 mins aswell. Standard brakes won't stand up to extreme use and will at some point let you down/fade/seize ...unlike the Wilwood 4 pot kit with Brembo discs...that pulls your face right off when you stand on them or gazrev1tubby's 200 SX calliper conversion using Mazda RX8 discs which will extract teeth...but if battered hard enough , these discs will warp...then you gotta get some floating discs like the hi-spec kit has...all dependes on how hard you drive.
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
My CRN discs (Ebay) seem fine so far, I went for grooved with std EBC crap ultimax pads and silver zinc coating to prevent unswept surface from rusting, was £200 delivered> I couldnt stretch to carbotechs (nearly £400) all round this time
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
The thing is grooved/drilled discs will never last as long as std discs, but should provide better braking due to dissipating heat and stopping pads glazing in the same way they can on std discs. the trade off is you will have to change them more often.

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Standard brake disc and pads Vs. updgraded kit
I'll post a pick up of my crn disc's and red stuff pads tonight and show what 5k miles of hard braking from fast road driving.
They were fitted last summer with new calipers (refurbed) from camskill
I've gone with the Gazrev1's nissan caliper bracket upgrade with the Nissan 300zx alloy caliper and supra tt uk spec 323x23 discs.
Note though - The Nissan S14 calipers are like the mr2 2 pots........bogus

Do you still run the same size rear brakes? Or do you use a bias adjuster?
I've got wms 4-pots on the front of mine and they are brill!
